Winter Projects

Postby husky390 » 12 11, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Below are my two. My super awesome wife gave me the green light this past summer to get back into street riding so finally, I got smart and bought a bike I knew she would like and ended up buying a 1990 Ultra Classic since this would be her first time on a bike. One ride and she fell in love with it and it's "her" bike, I just get to pilot it. So, I snagged an 03 Vstrom for me to have fun on and I plan to use it for some summer time elk scouting trips. So with these new toy's, some maintenance is in order and I'll be doing the following over winter.

Harley, aka couch.
New fork cartridges
New speakers
Fix tach
New clutch cable
New front brake line
New plugs, wires and coil
Replace drive belt and pulleys (sucks since I resealed the inner and outer primary last August)
Re-seal intake manifold to fix vacuum leaks and dial in carb
Possibly rebuild rear master cylinder

We're planning to take the Couch to Yellowstone the end of August 2018. Can't freaking wait.

Vstrom
24k service including fresh coolant, valve adjustment, TB sync,
Handlebar risers
Madstaad windshield
Tank bag
New front tire
Maybe some other farkles

What are you working on this winter?

Put on a Pheasants Forever banquet, teach a firearm safety class, and get ready for my spring project which is to build 80 stairs down to the lake out of landscaping blocks. I am trying to figure out the over/under on trips to the chiropractor for that project! 12? 25?

Husky, the wifey and I took a ride to Oregon from Mn last August. Went thru Yellowstone both out and back. The absolute worst and most dangerous parts of our trip. Foreign tourists in rental cars are abundant. Almost got wiped out once by a tailgater when a cow elk stepped out in front of us. Be careful. Dont miss Beartooth Pass tho.

And, had ‘92 FLH before our current bagger. Best thing I did to both bikes was throw a touring cam in em. (Winter projects both times)Night and day difference...

Thanks for the heads up. When we do ride through Yellowstone, we plan to do it early in the morning to beat most of the crowds. Beartooth Pass is on the wishlist and hopefully we can do that.

Mine has an Andrews cam in it but I'm not sure which one. It was installed by the original owner but it's fun.

I'm guessing the "EV-23" cam, that's what I call a touring cam. You're set!
If you get over Beartooth, and come down into Red Lodge looking for a motel, ya gotta stay at the Red Lodge Inn, you won't be disappointed. Very clean and scooter friendly. I highly suggest making a reservation earlier tho.
Good luck and ride safe!

Thanks for the tips. I ended up pushing our trip back a week so we'll be leaving Labor Day weekend and traveling through Yellowstone that week. Hopefully that will eliminate a lot of families being there because of school.

Now that hunting season is over it's time to expand one of my food plots. This one will be about 1/3 bigger when I'm done.

Build a raised bed or two for a garden. Always best to have fresh vegetables in your tag soup.
