What will you do with your antlers?

Postby Indian Summer » 04 15, 2018 •  [Post 1]

If you are lucky enough to tag a bull this year what will you do with it? Shoulder mount, European mount, or just cut the rack off?

I keep very few of the antlers I get. I have two sets of antlers left and they are not the largest I have taken. If they are special, I would do a European mount. Most likely I will give then to my brother, If it is a spike, like last year, they will stay in camp.

I'd love to do a shoulder mount on a nice bull but it would take up half the space in our small one bedroom townhouse :( but I think euro mounts look awesome also

If I get lucky enough to take a bull I may do a shoulder mount depending on how big the antlers are. If not it will just be a european mount.

Just skull cap the old boy for me; I don't want to pack anything heavier out :D

You can’t be serious. Pain is temporary. A nice Euro is forever.

My taxidermist does a very nice antler mount. I have a Euro, but honestly, I like the antler mounts better. For whatever reason, I am not a fan of Euro mounts. I have a shoulder mount so wouldn't do that......unless he was really, really big. Like 350+. Then I have no idea what I would do to it as the wife would not want another shoulder mount.

A big rack would be euro mounted in the shop/barn,
Smaller: a wacked off skull cap , mounted In the barn,
Even smaller whatever would be, likely the first person to ask for then would get them

I have three full shoulder mounts in my room. Two 5x6's are right and left turned facing each other. The other one is slightly turned to the left. The rest of them are hanging out on the barn, or up in the rafters of the barn

What happens will be entirely up to what I put in the dirt.
Pretty sure I will get one an only one chance to have a shoulder mount on the wall, due to space, cost and spousal limitations. So unless I draw a quality tag and put a big boy down it will be either a Euro or cap only mount.

Euro will depend on where the animal drops and if I want/can haul the entire head out along with a full bag of meat to not cause an extra trip just for the desire to do a Euro...

Euro mount for big bulls #300+ " or scull cap bleached for any others. I have one shoulder mount of a mountain goat but will probably never get another because of space in house. I put most of my antlers on the wall on a covered porch where they are up out of reach but visible for display. I'm just not a big fan of taxidermy for my own stuff but still admire a good mount for sure.

No euros for me, just not my cup of tea. Head mounts are just to big for my house. I think the horns on a nice black walnut plaque Is awesome.

I have a legitimate chance at 350+ this year with the tag I drew. I have a shoulder mount of a maybe 250? Never measured him because it didn't matter. He was my first elk, my first traditional gear kill, the bow was custom built for my best friend who gave it to me because his injuries sustained in the line of duty made him unable to shoot trad. Plus he called the bull in to me and watched me shoot it with his bow. He's never taken a bull with trad gear and never will now. He's also coming over to call for me again on this hunt, health permitting, I've got that recurve out and tuned up for a repeat. I don't know what I'll do with these, if I get one

Lsb-I know what I would do...I'd do a euro and give it to your buddy to thank him for his help, the bow and his service. Doing a euro yourself isn't hard. I'm a moron...if I can do it, anybody can. Would cost you less than $20, assuming you got a drum or pot big enough to hold that big ole rack. Good luck on your hunt!

He's getting the meat too. We'll process it and package it right at the house
