Purple fingers today

Postby wawhitey » 07 20, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Love huckleberry season. A bit early, picking will be 10x better in a week, but i did pick a couple today. Some of them even made it into my baskets instead of my mouth. :D

Went out today to scout, hang cams, and pick out a location for a backup treestand in the area ill be hunting big larry lunker incase of a funky wind. Had a very hard time. Huckleberrys everywhere. I got quite distracted. Think i gained 5 lbs today just shoving berries in my face. Did manage to select another treestand site and hang another cam somehow.

I was looking for them Saturday,.. still green.

When we lived in Washington we use to make a few fun family trips to pic huckleberries. We found a great place. never saw a person. My wife and I were picking away. Our oldest was 3 years old, we snapped a great pic of her with purple all over her face fingers and clothes. Then I found bear poop,.. lots of it,.. We had enough berries anyway.
thursday were going on an ATV ride specifically to look for berries and check out where I killed a bull 13 years ago.
My favorite berry

We ate all we could pick. They were just coming on strong. a good year for them in our area. However they are small.
But nothing like what we use to find in Washington state anywhere around Mt St Helen's.

Where I have been scouting, there might be enough Huckleberries around to make a pie if three guys wanted to spend all morning looking all around. Still it might be a small pie or one mixed with apples. It is good to see someone is finding good picking.

Berries are just because they are there.

Were headed to Seattle the week of the 23rd, My wife has a training and she wants to make some sort "vacation". I need to be a good boy because I hope to not be around much in September 8-) I was to help a buddy frame his cabin, but he still hasnt found a contractor to pour his foundation.

Dont think ive ever tried any kind of cheesecake, let alone huckleberry. You know what sounds great though, is a fresh baked loaf of banana bread with huckleberries and walnuts in it. But really, with these 90-100+ temperatures weve been having, just plain old frozen huckleberries out of the freezer by the handful are what the doctor ordered. This week im going to pick more for drying, and make backpack snacks with them. Nut n seed bars with dried huckleberries, almonds, walnuts, pecans, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and a touch of local honey. Delicious, and pack a lot of nutrition for the weight and bulk involved. Great hiking/hunting food.

Heres a recipe: http://www.therowdybaker.com

Its on the front page for now, but that will change soon im sure.

My daughter brought over another huckleberry cheesecake last night and move the irrigation pipe in the pasture

My daughter brings a manufactured seed/nut bar that tastes decent. Appears to be very close ingredients to the recipe you linked.

Instead of mixing I tend to keep ingredient sererate

With the cool temps and added moisture this yer the mountain and desert flowers are just slowing down.
The 2nd week of July the twin berry are in full swing,..This week the Thimbleberries, reds and yellows not yet this year In fact I saw flowers on some at 8500 ft last week
SO i guessing the huckle berries are 3 weeks at least away.
But that may mean red current will be thick most of elk season :D

The stupid Huckleberries were not ripe last week when I was in Eastern Oregon and they will be gone by the time I get back. If there are some still around in late August, my brother and I will pick enough for a camp-made pie. I really enjoy those little beggars.
