how do you long haul guys transfer your meat?

Postby the weasel » 08 08, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Just wondering how the people on here transfer an Elk back to the homestead if your say...5-7hrs. drivetime from home? Do you take it to the "local meat locker" for a couple days then take it home? How do you keep it cool on the trip? :?:

We "normally" take it to the nearest town for processing then haul the processed/frozen packages home in 1 1/2 big coolers (one 150 QT cooler and one 75 QT fits a processed elk). Sometimes we just store the boned out meat in a local town cooler and transfer it back home on ice to either process ourselves, or, take to a local processor. It all depends on our timeline and what is available in the local burgs.

I bring with me a cooler full of 8 to 12 frozen gallon jugs of water. I also bring a few empty coolers. Once the meat is cool in the morning I finish de-boning, and put the meat in the spare coolers with the frozen jugs. It has worked well for me. The jugs go in and out of the freezer each time I go out. If they are still in the freezer at the end of the season I use the water for my tag soup. Adds a unique flavor with the plastic jug funk flavor from being frozen and half de-thawed :)

I have the meat processed and frozen locally, then just place the frozen packages in a large cooler. I go 8-10 hours on the road and the meat is still frozen, even in hot weather. I do not place any ice in with the meat, so one cooler will handle even a large elk.

When friends from out of State hunt we put the meat all the way up and send home with dry ice.
Or boned and packed in ice,. keeping the water away from the meat
Late season gutted and packed in snow and "zipped or stitched back shut.

Years back when trapping we put fur in freezers. and made room for game meat all packaged.

 Make sure the freezer fits through the motel doors

We just bring a couple of freezers and a generator. But I'm sure that not what your looks for. We drive home 20 hours so frozen is the only option.

We haul a mid size freezer in the truck, we don't worry about running it. We put all the meat in and a layer of cardboard covered by a tarp and then dry ice on top. The meat is near frozen by the time we're back in KY 22 hours later.
