Wapiti Talk Photo of the Month Contest - September 2018

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 09 04, 2018 •  [Post 1]

The September 2018 Photo Theme is – "Hunting Partner in the Field". Yep, post up a pic showing your hunting partner in the field (man, woman, young hunter, bow, rifle, spear, dog, horse, mule, etc.); you get the picture (see what I did there)... ;) .

Rules:

1. One photo submission allowed per month, per member (yep, MODs may enter a photo also).
2. Photo must relate to the monthly theme (or risk being disqualified).
3. Do not use photo editing software to enhance your photo. Just post the photo as it was taken with your camera, smart phone, trail cam, etc. You may have to resize some photos so they are accepted by the forum software.
4. You may use older photos you have on hand, but, do not submit a photo that has won a previous WT photo contest.
5. Any WT member may enter a photo they have taken or star in.
6. Judging – WT members will vote on monthly photo submissions.
7. Contest period will normally end the last day of the month.
8. Winner must contact WapitiTalk1 via PM and provide mailing address for prize (your prize may be sent directly from a WT sponsor or from RJ).
9. Prizes will vary from month to month.

* At the end of the year, all monthly contest winners will be automatically entered into a Photo of the Year Contest.

I probably have better photos of my bow or my rifle, but my favorite hunting partner is my grandpa! It's a real bummer I won't get to hunt with him this fall, and I hope he's still in elk shape next year.

An interesting evolution to this friendship. A straight up flatlander from Statesboro Georgia this guy decided to go to guide school. I picked him up around midnight one night standing next to his pile of inadequate gear. He went about 100 pounds soaking wet, never saw a wall tent much less an elk..... greener than a pine tree he was! But he was determined! I honestly didn’t know if he’d make the cut. Those South Georgia folks can be slow mottion and outfitting is fast paced unless you can live without sleep. I did like his sense of humor which never failed even when the going got rough. He was dependable too. Will Cushner ended up guiding for me until I sold my business. He moved to Jackson Wyoming where he had been working at the ski resort in the off season. He guided for turkeys in the spring once the ski season was over. He was living the dream and making it work. We had become good friends in the time he worked for me and I found a spot to hunt elk through word of mouth that wasn’t too far from where he lived. I drove down and we proceeded to pack in a camp on a game cart which turned out to be a bad idea. We threw up a Marmot tent as fast as we could and decided to hike up the steep ridge behind camp. Halfway up we snapped some twigs underfoot and a small bull came running bugling his head off. That night we had a bourbon or three and bulls bugled all around us. The next day we hiked to what we now call the Glassing Tree. Bulls were bugling in three directions. We saw some deer, several bull moose, and three mountain lions. Tomorrow I would hunt. Will had already killed his null in an area I picked after grilling some maps earlier that year.

That nighht the bulls partied like rock stars. We could hardly sleep. The next morning we were up well before lifht having an oatmeal and listening to bugles. One in particular sounded pretty raspy so we headed that way in the dark. We closed the distance pretty good and it began to get light. He was moving uphill right to left so we cut uphill and got in front of him. It had only been light out for 10 minutes and we were in a good position. He hadn’t bugled for awhile but finally let one rip and there ge was heading right to us. He had a single cow in front of him. At 75 yards I dropped him in his tracks. Less than 30 minutes on day 1 we were done. We got him quartered out and went for the cart. Packed the entire thing out on it in one trip right from the kill site then went back for camp. We loaded everything including a week’s worth of uneaten food and the skull onto our packs and headed out..... in the rain. If you’ve ever walked or driven in the rain in Wyoming then you know what Wyoming gumbo is. It was a really tough hike with 100 pound packs. It might look like we are smiling in this picture. We were pretty happy to be at the truck but in reality we were gritting our teeth in pain. Another fine moment brought to you by Clip Shot.

Will is now a heck of an elk and deer guide. Packs bison off of the National Elk Refuge in the winter. Guides fly fishermen in his own drift boat all summer. Kills multiple elk and his antelope every season. He’s a great guy and truly one of my best succeses as an outdoor mentor. Love him like a brother.

This isn’t my entry photo but thought I’d show you a better shot of Willy. You can see the white bark from the aspens on the bulls antler bases from rubbing. We were definitely smiling in this one. Who kills a 6 point bull in 20 minutes in a place they’ve never hunted!

On second thought Rory..... make this my August photo entry. I love the genuine smiles and the handshake over a nice bull elk.

Thanks again Clip Shot!
