ElkNut Forum Users Meatpole - 2014

Postby ElkNut1 » 08 17, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Well, it's official, there are many areas in many states that have now opened for the 2014 Elk Season! This is the thread we can all share our kills on be it cow or bull, doesn't matter! Also feel free to throw a few Muley photos in as well if you've been so fortunate! Of course method of take does not matter, Bow, Rifle, Muzzle loader, slingshot, etc. (grin)

After hunting 4 days hard on my LE Elk hunt I had to come home and back to work for a while. It was just too hot and too many people moving around opening weekend to be very effective but I did see close to 35 legal bulls. I also passed on deer every day hoping to be able to take my boys with me at some point. So I will get back into my bivy camp in another week or so. After work yesterday my oldest boy Easton and I ran out to some property I have permission to hunt and spotted 3 bucks feeding in the corner of a field. We were able to stalk 1/4 mile and about 150 yards on hands and knees and belly to get within 100 yards. There were some does in another field that someone spooked and ran right into our bucks and stirred them up. After 30 to 45 minutes I was able to move enough to get a perfect broadside shot on this little buck. I am one proud Daddy and am proud of this buck even if he is my smallest ever taken. What a blessing to take and teach kids in the great outdoors.

My 2014 season is kicking off nicely. I took my 16 year old nephew out for his first ever archery hunt. Unfortunately he wasn't the one that arrowed this deer but he did almost get a crack at a different 4x4. It was a good experience for him and next time I am hoping we can seal the deal on his first archery kill. Here is the little 4x5 whitetail I shot on the opener. Now I just need to repeat with some elk.

Here's my sons opening day spike bull! I called it in to 18yds & he took him with a frontal shot! The bull traveled a short distance & was down in sight! He also has a 2nd elk tag & will be shooting for a branch antlered bull! Success is sweet! (grin)

Congrats to you all so far!

Archery Season 2014 has been a MAJOR blessing for Dad and I so far. I left the house on Friday morning before the opener at 2 a.m. I just couldn't sleep...so why not drive. Saturday morning found me in a tree stand at a location that I found early this spring in April while doing some scouting. I was in my stand all of 10 MINUTES when this spike bull walks in. Knowing that I had three weeks off to hunt I contemplated not shooting hoping to get a little more elk hunting in, but then I might not have another opportunity so I let him have it at 22 yards! I then drove him that afternoon to meet up with my wife so we could get him to the meat processor, we had a little road side tail gait party in the middle of no where. On Monday morning, 3 days into the season, I dropped dad off at a stand and told him I would be back to check on him at noon. At noon I pull up to see him packing the head and antlers down the hill of a nice 5x6 bull he had shot that morning. So happy for him, as this was the first bull he has killed with his bow and he has been archery hunting elk nearly as long as I have been alive! Dad is still up there chasing bucks. I go back out next week for another 7 day stretch in hopes to shoot a bear!

I've been reading your stories and seeing your pictures this past week and knowing the back story and how it all comes together thru hard work and planning makes me proud/happy to be part of hunting and a good group of people. I hope many others on this forum continue the string of success.

Opening morning my buddy Randy heard a mew and then a couple bulls fighting. After a 15 min battle, he used the Hoochie to call the loser into 25 yds. He "grass bagged" him the first shot but made good on a second 30 yarder through the heart.

9-4 a cow and a spike walk by me at 35 yds. Shooting through the pole timber I caught her in the last rib. She ran 20 yds and stopped with her hindend toward me. I came to full draw, had to wait a minute and when she started to turn at 50 yds I sent another arrow from the inside of the near ham to the opposite shoulder, breaking it. Always one to try to finish the job asap, I snuck up on her and did just that at 20 yds. All by myself and I didn't bring my camera or phone, the only pic I got was back at the wheeler with the second pack, which was one hind, both fronts and all the loose meat.

That afternoon the greenhorn of the group shot his second animal ever with a bow, a nice cow. Next day was a lot of meat cutting.

So it’s funny you say that because actually one_elk had nothing to do with how many elk I have killed but instead it was intended to express a degree of focus i.e. one elk at a time…., I know kind of weird…., anyway the name came from my inability to focus on the elk in front of me vs the “bigger” elk that surely was just over the next ridge…..what even makes this all more humorous the morning I shot this bull I was hunting by my one and only trail cam which I got pictures of the elk I shot just minutes before I shot and then a larger bull that came in to the exact same spot about hour (well to be more precise 64 minutes) after I shot my elk and while I working on my elk about 80 yards away. So there you have it…..anyway I feel fortunate to have harvested another bull, good luck to all…I will try to post the pictures below…

Howdy all! I haven't been on the site all year. A combination of last years hunt ending in a mess (elk moved out, weather moved in, we all got sick) and my wife saying I spent too much time reading forums and not enough time improving my hunting (even as much as I argued that reading elknut was improving myself! :D ).

This year I had the first 9 days of the CO archery season off, as I started a new job on September 8. This was exciting, but not my preferred time to hunt. We set up a spike camp 2.5 miles uphill from base camp, where the plan was to sleep every other night.

The first morning was almost all we needed, with a bull being called in at 7:00am, but my wife didn't think he was legal. At 7:30am, another close call on a bigger bull. We thought this was a good sign, but it appeared these were the only two elk that were living in the area, as we spent the next 5 days finding nothing (ok, not entirely nothing, a few butts headed uphill at first light). We took a couple of days to try out some old and new spots which resulted in no fresh sign.

I was starting to get pretty bummed and we were all talking about what a nice camping trip this was turning out to be. We returned to our spike camp and I was determined to look higher and further than I had ever been before. As I had been hunting with my wife and father, I had done a lot of calling for them. This day I would head too far in, and thus be solo. While I did find some fresh sign, there wasn't a lot of it. I figured there were some solo bulls in the area. By this point last year the pre-rut had been in full swing with bulls running around trying to call in cows, yet we had only heard a couple of bugles all week this year. I went even deeper to where I had been told is a great spot to find elk, but a terrible spot to pack one out. I found deer and bear, but no elk.

However, as evening approached and I was working my way back down a canyon towards spike camp, bugles started erupting downhill from me. I raced to catch up with them but I could never seem to get on a herd. Finally, I got to a point where I was on the same elevation as the bugling elk and tried some cow calling. It was about 7:30 and my time was running out, as I needed to get back closer to our trail to return to spike camp. Something fell and as I bent to pick it up, I saw at 20 yards the bull turn and trot away. He had come the same exact way I had come, the one place I wasn't watching.

You can bet I was upset with myself as I left to get back to our trail. As I neared, about 1/4 mile from our route out, I came upon a small meadow I had never seen before. I don't know why I did it, but I let out a mew and took a couple of steps. As I came to a stop, I saw antlers directly on the other side of a bushy patch of trees from me. As it was around 7:40, the light was getting pretty dim. This must have saved me. This bull was less than 20 yards from me! He slowly turned and took a few steps forward to look in the woods, wondering who made this mew so close to him.

Looked forward to a week of muzzleloading all summer. And just like that it was over opening morning. Thanks to the guys that helped me get dialed in on a gun I was not familiar with.

You guys are killing me! Since I can only hunt weekends I've officially gotten 4.5 days of hunting in this season. There is so much sign I can't even believe it, yet only a spike and cow seen during shooting hours. Game cameras picking up TONS of elk between 10pm and 4am. Not a single daytime photo.

My First . . . Finally . . . after a 5 year quest to kill my first elk with a bow (first elk ever).

30 yard frontal (lots of research of anatomy) and lots of shooting practice. I don't take unethical shots or shots that I'm not 100% confident with achieving a fast humane death. My bull only made it 80 yards straight down hill, about 50 yards before he crashed hard, then another 30 yards of which I could hear him gurgling.

Super excited and happy.

You can see the arrow sticking out.

First off congrats to all the elknuts who got there bull! And good luck to those still trying! Also thanks to those who post, from these posts I've picked up a lot of useful info.
My son and I each purchased one lottery ticket for New Mexico's Valles Caldera. As a non-resident we knew our chance of drawing that one tag was slim. But miracles happen and the winner was me. My hunt was Sept 12-16. The bulls were fired up and on the second day my son had called a huge bull to within 50-60 yards of me. Just out of the my effective range when the adrenaline is pumping. On the third evening we were waiting for the thermals to switch as a number of bulls kept sounding off the ridge above us. I decided to put an arrow on my Matthews Drenalin and draw it back to see if the peep lined up. As I drew back, there was a loud crack. My son and I each looked at each other and said what was that. Then I noticed the lower limb had collapsed/splintered. We quickly went back to the truck to retrieve my back up bow (an Oregon Deschutes that must be nearly twenty years old. I had only shot it once all summer to see where the single pin was sighted in. I put a piece of duct tape on the back of the limb stating 35 yards so an old fart like me wouldn't forget). We then went after some bulls that were bugling without any luck. The fourth morning of the five day hunt was uneventful as well, we heard the bulls but couldn't get close. Thoughts of tag soup started to creep in. We decided that I would sit a remote pond. Every afternoon we had spent time watching different ponds or wallows. We figured we weren't going to kill one at the truck.
Brandon would stay at the truck, since one can hide better than two. I grabbed my bow, a hang on treestand and a few hangon steps and headed off the mile to the pond. I only went up the tree five feet since it was dead from a fire a couple years earlier and I didn't know how stabe it was. But that five feet would put my head near its lower limbs, also provide a flat platform on the steep terrain. When I tied a pull up cord to my bow, I noticed I forgot my quiver. My Matthews always fit in its case with the quiver attached and my back up bow needed the quiver to be removed. So the quiver was in the back seat of the truck. So off I went the mile back to get my quiver. By the time I was settled in the tree with arrows it was 1pm. At 2pm I heard then seen a huge bull moving towards the little pond. At 100 yards he stopped, put his nose in the air, then turned and trotted away. The disappointment didn't last long as a second bull(a bit smaller) came to the pond fifteen minutes later from a different angle that wouldn't offer up my scent. I remember praying dear lord help me shoot a good arrow. The bull stopped at the pond 37 yards away and began to drink. I slowly moved into position, drew back and aimed tight to his near shoulder(since he was slightly quartering towards me). When the arrow hit, the bull spun and I noticed the arrow cartwheeling into the air. I thought did it bounce off his shoulder? The bull ran up the opposite slope, stopping at 45-50 yards to glance back. Once he tried to get going again I knew it was over, he couldn't keep his legs under him. He went down. The arrow had actually been snapped in half and the fletched end was what I saw.
Quickly I bailed out of the tree to go tell my son and retrieve the packs/kill gear. The bull was later scored at 329 5/8's. As we boned him out, five other bulls came to the pond. When we heard them coming we just kneeled near my bulls carcass, kept quiet to see what they were. Below is a picture of my bull and also a picture of one of the bulls that came in. By 9:30 we had him boned out and packed back to the truck. Fifth elk hunt, first elk.

I called this bull in to the deafirishman perfect 11 yrd frontal shot he ran 250 -300 yds with the easiest blood trail ever. This was are groups 1st archery kill. Long story short 3 of us were working in on a heard bull got to within 125 yds of the bull started calling and this satellite walk right in. It was the 3rd elk within 45 yds that morning. What a day. Thanks to the play book and the help of this site we can home with 2 bulls. Notice the new Badland 2200 pack from Packfitter.com it carried a 70 lb back quarter for 4 hours and it work great.

Added the blood trail from the bull, this is were he stopped after a started cow calling him that log is 7 foot long. he still ran 250 yards. But it was towards the truck it all helps.

They call that a devil's tine is what the taxidermist told me. I thought it was cool too. He could be considered a 6x7 but I just tell people he's a 6x6. Now if he was a whitetail I'd say he was a 13 pointer! lol :D

My "quality bull permit" bull here in WA. Was the second elk I had seen in 7 days hunting. First one came in to an "advertising sequence" on opening morning Sept 2. Thanks Paul for that info. Too bad the setup wasn't better as he was a big boy.

This guy was taken from an ambush spot. Was a long 64 yd shot but I was good with that (practice longer shots w/ bheads) and very steady, leaning against a tree from in my makeshift ground blind. He went 23 yards.

Congrats to everyone.

sorry for the tongue shot

Re: ElkNut Forum Users Meatpole - 2014

Postby elk.addict » 09 23, 2014 •  [Post 83]

This year was an action packed season. I had multiple opportunities at some real nice bulls but couldn't close the deal due to a variety of mishaps. The most frustrating one was one of the bigger bulls I encountered (a nice 320" 6x6). I was creeping through the timber, with my partner about 150 yards below me doing the same. As I exited the timber, there was a lone bull bedded in a little meadow. He was facing away from me and the wind was in my favor. I snuck up to 60 yards, and since I had everything in my favor I decided to continue sneaking. There was only 2 short alpine firs between me and him, which was helpful, but the grass was very tall so I started crawling just to be on the safe side. I got to 50 yards, everything was going great. I decided to go to 30 before shooting. Moments later, by partner had entered the meadow (I thought he was much lower in the drainage), and as he hopped over the creek, the bull caught his movement and ran away. I was sooo close, but just had to laugh it off as that has been my luck so far this season!

Fast forward to Sunday night (last evening of my vacation). I was on my own as my partner had went home on Friday afternoon. I was on my way out of the backcountry with all my gear. I neared the trailhead (about 1 mile from the rig), where I have ran into elk numerous times in the timber. I decided to let out 1 last bugle, I got no response. I sat down at tried a short cow calling sequence. Next thing I know, a bull is bugling and crashing towards me through the timber (about 100 yards away). I barely had time to nock an arrow before he was 20 yards in front of me. He stopped and scanned the timber for the cow, and as he walked behind a tree a drew my bow, he either seen my movement or heard it, or both, and started trotting off. I cow called again and he stopped broadside. I put my 20 & 30 yard pins on his lungs and let 'er fly. A made a good shot and as he ran off I cow called again, he stopped for a moment and then fell over!

This was by far my easiest pack. EVER. Usually I'm 4-6 miles back in some blow-down hell-hole! This was less than a mile from rig, on a forest service trail and slightly downhill all the way! I went ahead and deboned him and packed out that night and was at home in bed early that morning.

Colorado Solo DIY, Wilderness area, 09/19/2014. 7 days of hard hunting, one long night, and two days of packing heavy loads two miles straight up the mountain.
I am physically beaten down, but Spiritually renewed! Truly Blessed this Season!

I've put some meat in the freezer this year, too. Nothing big....but at least I've got meat, and had a great time!

And a cow elk (but I left my camera in the truck)

Got the antelope in NW Nevada, and the cow elk 2 weeks later in NE Nevada. Temps were in the low 90's, so I didn't see many elk (5 small bulls and only 3 cows altogether). Heard absolutely no bugling!!

Will post a full story this week, but drove solo from Boston, MA to Montana as a rookie Elk hunter, hunted HARD for 11 days getting this 5x5 at the last moments of the trip. Got home after almost 36 hours straight in the car last night.

Postby elkaholic » 09 28, 2014 •  [Post 98]

On the eighth and final day of our hunt my partner and I were on a bull that we had glassed up. We were following his bugle and gaining on him. Finally he was one rise away and as I eased around a rock pile I spotted this bull looking in our direction from about 100 yrds to our right. I froze and signaled my partner to stop. Slipping back to him we came up with a game plan. I was going to set up about 60 yrds ahead and just through a swale. He would call when I gave the green light. As I eased up to my ambush spot I heard a faint panting. At the time I thought it was the other bull just over the rise. Little did I know I was literally on top of this bull and a cow. I circled through the swale and into a gully 30 ft wide. As I eased up the slope to my ambush site I saw two elk to my immediate left. They were 42 yrds away and all I could see was from their gut back. Arrow nocked I eased out into the open hoping they would not move and spot me. I drew from my knees, raised up bring his vitals in view, anchored and sent it. At the hit the bull jumped and ran 40 yrds before stopping and laying down. I slipped around him and let my partner know what had happened. Moving slowly up to where I could see him he got up and I had a quartering away shot at 40 yrds. With that arrow he staggered and fell for good.

Spent the last 9 days in the backcountry in MT with 3 friends and I was lucky to stick this bull with a lot of help from my buddy Jeremiah, Brandon, and Mike! I'll tell the story later, but after a disappointing 2013 I took this 6x6 (main frame 5x5, but two one inch sticker for an Ohio boy :D )on September 21st for my first ever Bull! I have to say we repeatedly got the playbook out and read exactly how to approach situations. Thank you Paul, first of all for firing me up back in February when I was in laid up in bed, recovering from double hernia surgery. You spent almost 2 hours on the phone going over situation after situation! THANK YOU SIR!! Also for the rest of the ElkNut crew, you guys are awesome! I've never been on a forum where guys are so willing to help other be successful! Thank you guys!

Don't look a gift horse, or in this case "gift elk" in the mouth. At least not until he's down and out!
Stalked him and got in between his cows on the afternoon of the second day, he trotted by at 30 - 35 yds. and not a lot of time to field score or even count points (7x7). So take him or leave him? I took him!

Congrats Kev. I know how bad you wanted to avenge yourself after last year. How about a thread telling us about the hunt. Anyone else have any shot opportunities?

Clay, let's see a side view of that bull please. Nice!

OTC Will... glad he didn't stick you first. Nice bull, and solo! You da' man!

Gutpile. Wow! Any goat with a bow is impressive. Hats off to you on what must have been an awesome experience.

Lark... I don't know what to say. I'm so happy for you man. Congratufrickinlations!!!!!!!

And to everyone who connected so far: Good job guys! ;)

Here is one of the bulls I called in that ceetoo put down. Awesome bull! Green scored at 339 and change DIY public land herd bull. To give some perspective the G3's were almost 19". It was hard to get some quality shots late in the day with the long shadows. Oh well..

New Mexico 16A Mobility Impared

Postby hornart » 10 15, 2014 •  [Post 128]

Well the adventure started with me getting on a plane for Missouri to go and help my disabled Vietnam Veteran friend in Illinois , drive to New Mexico for our elk hunt in the Gila. We found some bugling bulls opening morning but were to far behind to catch up so I took my friend Bob to sit on a water hole for the evening hunt, he saw some mulie bucks and even had a bear walk by , then a small group of cows came to get a drink and he said that they just dove right into the waterhole, he watched them splash and play around and then finally walk away, here comes some bulls, 3 small raghorns, he got set up on the bigger of the 3 and then saw some more antlers coming so he held up and this 7x7 is what showed up for him , his shot was perfect and the bull fell right there. This was his first bull elk and the only elk he had ever taken. I was able to catch up with a good 6x6 bull on the fourth morning of the hunt.

Staring at this bull through my scope telling myself how small he was and not to shoot when all of the sudden.....my rifle went off :) . I still have no self control! hahahaha. Passed up bigger bulls than this during archery season but hey....I guess I won't starve this winter :)

2014 Success!!! Went 3 for 3 on bull tags for the first time ever. We usually don't run into many big bulls where we hunt, so this 6x6 was a real treat! I'd guess he's maybe 320" or so (but I'm not very good at that)...

My first post on this site and my best Elk to date. Colorado DIY Muzzleloader public land. Shot him at 30yards sitting a pinch point between two known good valleys in the evening. He was a herd bull trailing a dozen cows. Bugling every 90 seconds. Even though I had been practicing my calling for six months prior, I remained silent the entire encounter. Afterall, the cows were coming already. He went about 20 steps but almost no blood even though autopsy showed a high heart shot. He was a 6x4 non-typical with a corkscrew browtine. Congratulations to the other successful hunters and don't give up to you other guys still trying to get it done.

Finally connected with a cow this last Sunday with a special cow tag. Did not take any pictures. I guess I can now concentrate on a bull and a general deer tag. Congrats to all the ones on here that harvested there animals. There where some great bulls taken this year by the looks of things.

Got this guy yesterday in eastern Wa with my bow. I was sitting in my tree stand and a couple does fed through early on. It was getting about prime time so decided to stand up. After about 45min of standing I catch some movement, look over 4 does running right at me. I was thinking there must be a buck chasing them, so I ready myself. Sure enough a buck right behind them. He goes behind a tree, I draw, when he stops his vitals are covered by a tree. Then he turns towards me so once again no shot. I held full draw for like the minutes and had to let down. He caught movement and took off. Thought the game was over. So I pulled out my estrus can and tipped it once real slow. He stopped and looked back, then looked at the does. He decided he liked that call, walked back towards me. Stopped at 20 yards broadside and I let him have it.

I braved the 10 deg weather today and went whitetail hunting. Rattled in this buck , He came in at a trot and almost ran me over, shot him straight at 18 yards, and he dropped in his tracks. I swear it was self defense.

My little MT buck on my first solo hunt out of state. -5 to -15 degrees ambient temp with 10-20 mph winds. It was a bit on the cold side to say the least! Shot him well within 'bow range' with my rifle. :)

10 minutes of daylight left, last day of the season (november 19th.) Couldnt find him that night, not even a single drop of blood. thought i missed him clean. despite the complete lack of any sign of a hit i felt obligated to go back the next morning to search in daylight instead of headlamp/flashlight, though i felt certain it was a pointless waste of time, and he was laying there the whole time, walked right by him the previous night in the dark multiple times. even called my dad out to meet me up on top of the mountain to help search in the dark and he couldn't find the deer or a single drop of blood either. Anyway the shot was good, he may have lived 2 seconds at most, and no lions or yotes or nothin got to him, and luckily it was COLD out, so the meat is still fine and dandy. The big boy i was holding out for the whole season was shot by a friends wife almost the exact time i shot this buck.

Congratulations Longdraw! When I saw you had a post on the Meatpole I couldn't click fast enough. My brother killed his bull just a couple days ago after several weeks of long hard hunting. It's never easy. Did you read my "Migration Routes" thread. I've been thinking of you. Get that permit next year! Happy holidays.

Public land DIY 356 gross B & C. A fitting 1st bull for the Former RMEF World Champion Elk Caller. We are so proud of you buddy!

This was one of the most rewarding hunts of my life!

New to the forum so I thought I'd share my 2014 OTC washington muzzleloader bull. I shot him opening morning early, he came in bugling on a string. Took him at about 30yds and he only went about 10 feet.

I'm late on posting this for Meatpole-2014. These are from the 2014 Idaho archery season. Over-the-counter tags, public land, DIY. My nephew got his bull about 10:30 opening morning, August 30, and I got mine on 9-11-15 about 5:30 PM. Great archery season! My first year ever trying trail cameras or tree stands for elk. Now I'm addicted!
