Tree Stand Hunting in a Burn Area

Postby CurlyTail » 07 11, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I would love to set up a tree stand in my area, except it is a 10 year old burn (severe) and the majority of trees are dead but still standing. Some huge dead Ponderosa.

I have assumed that it would not be safe to set a tree stand in a dead tree

What about a ladder stand that sets against a tree? Still to risky?

Find a live tree or set up a ground blind. That is what I would do anyway.

IMHO, stay away from the dead tree, even with a ladder the top could fall out and hit you at any moment.

I have one spot that I know of that has a decent water hole for mule deer. It is in the middle of an old burn. I wouldn't trust the trees for a stand. Every year during hunting season I sit it a few days (In a ground blind)for deer once I fill my elk tag. There are always days when I'm there that trees are crashing down from even the slightest breeze. This year I went in there to check it out in early spring and found 25+ trees down (and ruined the water hole) from a major storm that went through there this winter. I wouldn't trust the trees if they are dead even in a ladder stand.
