Barely 200

Postby Swede » 05 22, 2017 •  [Post 1]

This is another "what if" question. It is a little different, but designed to see where other hunters are in their priorities.
It is 8:00 o'clock opening morning August 27th, and a small 4X4 bull comes by your stand and is looking back. You have no idea why he is looking. You cannot see or hear anything in particular other than a bird chirping.
On your game camera you have taken several pictures of a 325-335 class 6X6 at this location. He is the reason you chose this particular water hole/wallow. He always comes around in the evening, but only about once a week. It is five days since he last showed up. You have the area to yourself as far as you know, and the weather forecast is for more of the same. Are you shooting now, or are you going to wait?

Me? I'm "shootin" now as Yosemite Sam would say.

I'd take the raghorn bull. My shooting distance is limited with the recurve, so I can't be too choosy. I like having lean elk meat in my freezer to make meals for my family all winter.

Piledriver and Stinger are one the way. Now just have to wait an hour and go claim my first bull with a bow.

Not for me this early in the season (although it's not even open yet in the states I hunt). Plenty of time left to dirt nap a bigger racked critter.

Bird in hand, or in this case a bull.

I will go against the grain and wait. I would pay 110% attention to what that 4X4 is looking at. He could be looking at Mr. Big coming in. The opportunities for that big of a bull are few and far between. Going home without an elk would be better than missing out on the big bull for me. Now, if circumstances change (later in the week, hunting pressure, weather, etc) then the arrow would be launched.
