What did you do todayto get ready for elk season

Postby Lefty » 06 25, 2019 •  [Post 1]

I liked last years version And thought this is a good way to share and keep excited about elk season
So what did or will you do today to get ready for season.
Since the bear season is over for me,.. sorta. Im going to start putting my hunting clothes together in a clean bin. Ill start with washing undergarments that will be used the month of Septemeber That includes my mirino wool, top and bottoms. My ; their last chance daily underwear. ( they wont come back,.. used then burned) and wool socks Ill prep the little Plano locker, wipe it down, and place fresh sage in a bag to dry and give my clothes that "driven over sage brush smell  And a few "camo items that wont be needed til season, such as shirts, pants,
and shoot a few arrows

So share , how re you getting ready!

I have been shooting my bow and doing my daily hikes. I need to start going through the items we will use on our July scouting trip.

Walked the pup around the neighborhood before work with a weighted pack on my back. Bought a couple pair of merino boxers. Did 3 super sets of pushups and 5 flights of stairs with no rest other than walking back down them. Shot my bow till my back muscles hollered "uncle". IN other words, more than Swede.

Ok you show-offs. Don't over-do it now and strain something just because I pointed out you had a laid back approach to getting ready for elk hunting. I shot my bow 24 times, which I do every other day and I walked my daily 3 miles on dirt and gravel. My work out is serious preparation while yours is just a rush reaction after watching a Primos elk video.

Put on my pack, hiked an hour up a local trail. Quicker coming down. Reviewed elk forums, visualized making the shot

Just because us young guys still have the ability to have a physiological reaction to videos doesn't mean you have to get jealous, Swede! I suppose your doctor could prescribe something to help. I hear there's this new pill out... only comes in blue I'm afraid. You might offend big Red.

I separated out six blue pills from my sack of M&Ms and tried them the other day. They taste the same as the red ones to me. I sure failed to observe any physiological reaction. I think offering blue M&Ms was just another advertising trick.

I made a new target back stop in my yard today. I used conveyor belt that I found on the road. I wish I had an elk target to put in front of it. There is a large osage tree falling in my yard next to it. I'm going to take it to a sawmill this winter. I want to build a lean-to target shed to keep the rain off of them. I'll use the osage lumber for the siding. It should outlast me.

Today I did a 10k (6.2 miles) road race with my pack. I was hoping to break 1:40 and ended up finishing at 1:26. I got 10th place out of 68 walkers. When I got home I got all of my gear out and went through it to see what I still need to get.

I did 5 miles today in the hottest heat and most unbearable humidity here in western Kentucky after completely overhauling my pack, I took off my kifaru timberline 2 bag and just went to a cargo net and a couple belt pouches, trying to get my pack a little more quiet in the elk woods.

Shot my bow for the first time this summer over the weekend. Every arrow would have been a dead elk. Feel pretty good about where I am starting from.

Did 3.5 miles with my pack on today. Flat terrain, but oh well.

Same thing ive been doing for about a month now. Sitting on my butt at sea level and eating too much. But im about to take 2 months off, so there will be lots of hiking and hunting and biking going on. bears to kill, berries to pick, stands to hang, cams to check, scouting to do. and of course shooting. lots of shooting. And if im lucky i might actually get a few days of rifle elk season off this year.

I went ahead and built a large target so I can practice at long ranges without losing arrows in the corn field. Ended up costing me about $30 (I had most of the materials left over from building our house). Now I have this 80 lb 43"x43" hillbilly Block to chuck arrows at the rest of the summer.

Then I biked 13 miles.

Sweet setup rvanbw00! That’ll work like a charm.

I can’t work out yet (still in recovery mode from snout surgery), but, I did get some Pro-bar and Honey Stinger items ordered (day snack chow), a handful of freeze dried meals, a box of shells for the deer rifle from Underwood Ammo, replacement hinges for the big cooler, and looked at a bunch o’ maps for ID and WA hunt areas. Hope to be hiking and shooting the bow within a week 8-)

Been shooting my new bow, and feeling really good about it. But i guess thats getting ready for deer season. If i get time to hunt elk at all this year, it will be during modern firearm.
Tomorrow im going to ride my bike up in the mountains. If i get to hunt elk this fall, ill be going in on my bike. Hunting a non motorized gated area.

Biking and hiking. During the hiking portion i stopped to listen for a minute, and sure enough i hear something coming my way. Being as how i was surrounded by service berries i figured it was a bear. Yup, here he comes, 70ish yards out. I held still and waited, wind was in my favor. He ended up feeding to within 30 or so yards of me, never knew i was there. Just a little guy, non shooter. Still fun to see though, getting excited for bear season to open on the 1st. Getting close now!

I sharpened up a few broadheads, touched up a few knives so they could shave if needed, inventoried gear totes and ordered a few small items, and even hiked a bit with a few of the pack o dogs. I think I’m starting to heal a bit from the whole, untimely snout surgery mess. He’ll, who knows.. I may be ready for the Idaho leg of my elk season in a bit over a month from now.

I packed some more things, made a camp table, did my regular hike and shot some broadheads. The broadheads were hitting a little low until I adjusted the sights. I knew they would hit low as my field points were hitting about 4 inches low at 40 yards.

Shot my rifle only to find out something is off. My quarter size groups were more like pie plates. I sure hope I haven't worn old Maggy out completely. Going to do some copper fouling cleaning and a little bit of trigger work then get her back out in the field to see if things tighten back up.

Started doing a 100 pushups every morning about a month ago and finally feel like it's a habit and am reaping the benefits. Need a good hill to climb every morning now.

Other than previously stated and been doing consistently, hiked my hunting area last weekend checking cams and set another one, got charged by a bear, and yesterday was broadhead/arrow check day. I numbered and named each arrow in order of how they shot. SouthShore Archery did me richeous once again. No flyers and bow is in tune :)

Nice. Always a good feeling to get the time off locked down!

Went down south and got a new ATV. Sold the RZR earlier this year and had an equipment void to fill :-/.

Hey Boss what did you get fro an ATV?
All my pants, shirts raingear, cold gear and jackets are packed

All my Tech stuff is together ,.. basically made sure all the wind check is filled,..and all the odds and ends in the storage box. I do need to go though all the batteries and put a head lamp in the pack

My wife wont be home for another hour, I put antifog on the lenses of my range finder and spotting scope.
Pulled everything out of my pack,.. It needed to be cleaned, it went on a few coyote hunts and late season muzzle loader hunts I just like all my stuff to be as scent reduced as possible.

Dennis, I decided on a Yamaha 450 Kodiak EPS. It should work fine for hunting and around the place. Tore into my gear totes today. Ordered some Wild Zora backpack chow and a rack for the back of the Kodiak. Hiked a bit with the old Army Alice pack pack this evening. I like to train with the old army pack so I “really” appreciate the EXO K2 when I start hunting.

I generally use the Honda Rancher 405 cc
I don’t want or need a big machine if stuck I can still lift it out of tire ruts

A lot of the farmers around here are still using those Suzuki 250

Today at lunch I’ll put the remaining camo that I wear all summer in the wash and into the clothes bin

Tonight I’m taking my wife shopping . I’m buying all new underwear , 10 sets of top and bottom underwear
All my “old “ stuff will be washed in silver( prevents underarm and crotch stink for a while) to be used one last time during the season and tossed after wear.

I’ll shoot if the winds stay down

I washed my pack last night , I’m sure there was more than dirt
The last 60 hours of wear were in deep snows and it was dirty

And maybe I’ll also wash my -5 bag and liner today too
I need to get this utility room textured and exterior wall prepped for siding

I did nothing special, but I packed up some more camping/hunting gear, shot some broadheads and went for my three mile hike. My Garmin InReach is now activated again. It is getting close.

I sent out about 10 preset messages on my InReach before I realized I was annoying other people.

Hiked with pack, walked the dogs :?, and shot some Magnus broad heads out to 40ish. They’re like heat seeking elk vitals missiles. Of course I’ve gotta be careful shooting then out of the Darton so I don’t blow things up behind the target 8-)

weighed myself this morning and am down about 5-6 pounds. The week of hiking in Glacier really helped! Back to the daily workouts. Went over to a buddy's house who is coming for the first time and watched him set up his wall tent. He definitely has the fever!

I know. One year I came back from hunting and some character (maybe the pastor) at the church door handed me a visitors card. I get no respect there either.

Great come back Swede!

Shot again yesterday and after some slight adjustments at the Archery Shoppe, screwed a WickedTrick on and took a few shots. Nothing consistent here. So I screwed on a RazorTrick and drilled every shot at 30 and 40 yards.

More practice with my diaphragms. Total control of my reeds. Is it time yet?

Almost time TH, getting close. I’d like you to try one of the Magnus broad heads sometime. True cut on contact head and they fly well.

Started meal prep last night. Cooking large batches of spaghetti, fajitas, chili, taco bake, etc... and vac seal into meal size bags and freeze. Come elk camp, I load up a 45 qt RTIC and they stay frozen for the duration of the trip. Pull one out when we leave camp that morning and it's ready to heat up in boiling water when we get back that evening.

I like the frozen meal plan. I was planning on pre cooking breakfast sausage and pre slicing things like onion and peppers.
I need to keep the carbs down

Today I bought about 40 partial meals
bought all new underwear.
My current underwear will get washed with scent free silver as soon as Im off the computer
Also got my archery tag

What didn’t I do today to get ready! Got rained out at work so I hit it hard. Set the spike tent up in the yard for a final seam sealing and to fit the tarp. Took two trips to Harbor Freight to get the right one. While I was there I picked up a mesh tarp for the floor. Gathered everything under the sun for base camp. Laid it all out in the garage. Slapped a heavy coat of Obenaufs on the Kenetreks and hit them with some heat to melt it in. Banged out at least 90% of the million little items on my camp/gear/clothes list. I also made an appointment with the president of a 1000 yard benchrest rifle club down in West Virginia. I’m going to reload a few boxes of ammo this Thursday and go meet with him next Wednesday. After a few shots through the chronograph he’ll punch things into his software program including the elevation I hunt at and see how many clicks the various distances will require. Then we’ll start actually shooting further and further to be sure things check out. The gun will have to cool down periodically so the whole thing will take about 3 hours. Pretty excited about that. I’ve never done anything like that so I have no idea what I’m capable of. Just going to listen to the gun guru and play it by ear.

After that I have 2 more sleeps and it’ll be time to hit interstate 80 for two days and set camp. I’m finally going to step back in time to the world I was born to live in. Bring on the mountain life! :D

Good luck Joe. The long range shooting is a whole nother world. I added a Leupold scope to my 7 mag a couple years back with the CDS dial to 700 yards. I know that's not even close to long range for a lot of people, but that's double any shot I'd taken to that point on paper and nearly 3 times any shot i'd taken on game. I sat dry firing for a good ten minutes before I fired a shot and realized how difficult it was to stay on target at those ranges. Once I got settled down though, it was one shot milk jug kills at 500, 550, 600, and 650. Makes the 300 yard shots feel like you're shooting a popcan at point blank range.

I got my meals all cooked and frozen, jerky made, pack cleaned and loaded with essentials, guns cleaned. Just need to pick up a couple odds and ends, reload some ammo, and get the trailer to Les Schwab for a pregame checkup and we'll be hitting the road next Friday. Can't wait to see this view again.
