When is your first day, with weapon in hand, in the elk woods this year? What kind of tag do you have?

I'm hoping to be in the woods September 11th. I'll be toting around with my hoyt carbon spyder with a Montana bull tag in my pocket. I might take my recurve a day or 2 if I can get more confident with it by the time I leave.

August 27th for me, Oregon opener with bow for elk and bucks, also packing a fall black bear and courgar tag

Swede left today. My dad and I will be camping with him again. I know his primary is elk and he has a buck tag aswell.

Sept 13th I will be headed from Hobbs, NM into Southern CO. staying until either the 25th or an ES elk is placed in the coolers, whichever comes first. Going solo with my Bowtech RPM360, and my Diamond Rock backup. If i get lucky early i have been invited on a bear hunt in Northern NM that will take me up to the 25th.

I will be in the high country September 16th in southern Colorado with a otc either sex tag in my pocket Mathews z7 in my hand and a bugling bull closer in my mouth. We plain on hunting until both are tags are filled or the 25th. 22 more days left till we leave it's starting to feel and smell like bow season. These passed couple days I have been watching elk hunting videos and trying to figure out what the elk say and then the hunters reaction. Yesterday I must have watched to many because I went on three elk hunts last night :lol:

I will have to miss opening day this year. I didn't realize it started so early, and set up my brothers bachelor party on August 27th. I'll head out Sunday morning on the 28th for an archery Elk and Deer hunt in CO.

Sept 15-25 in Montana carrying the Matthews Z7 for elk. Then whitetail in MN from Nov 5-13 in the shotgun zone. This year we can take 2 deer so my 12 year old daughter is really pumped. Pretty fun to see the excitement in her eyes when I told her she can shoot 2 deer this year.

Leave Thursday the 26th for a 32 days of Archery hunting in Colorado then I come back home for 3 weeks then head back for 1st rifle season. I will be caring a Hoyt Nitrum Turbo and a Mathews Heli-M Bow for archery season and Sako Tikka T3 Light 7mm Mag with Zeist Terra for rifle season.

I have an Either sex archery Elk tag, Either Sex Archery Deer Tag, Either Sex Archery Antelope tag, Early Rifle Bear tag, and a Cow 1st Rifle Tag.

First day was this last Sat. Plenty of long walks with bow in hand. Actually, I had elk within bow range twice each of the three days I was hunting. The problem was that my view was of butts as they headed off into the brush each time.

It's a spike/cow bow hunt, so that big 6 that I met on the trail wasn't an option anyway. All by himself up high in the firs, think he was coming down for water when I met him at 4:30. The rest were cows/calves in really small groups (three? four tops). Two weak/lazy bugles Monday am was the only talking I heard aside from a talkative calf next to camp Sat night. Where I was at the bulls were otherwise silent, and not with the cows.

On a positive note, I did set up a trail cam on a really high use area leading into some various bedding options. Hopefully the data collected will give me some idea of whether catching them coming/going on the trail is an option. Strange area I was hunting though, unlike any other I've hunted. Really varied mix of firs and aspens, and bedding areas were scattered all over the slope in unpredictable fashion. I could be 50 yards from a spot I marked on GPS as a bed I found fresh (wet) pee spots in the day before, but from just 50 yards away, you couldn't tell there was a group of firs with clearing underneath that would serve as a bedding area. You could walk right by and have no clue if you didn't wander and happen to chance onto it. Unfortunately the most likely water options are on private land, and the trails headed to those stock ponds are numerous - no major one or two trails.

Looking forward to when the bulls group up with the cows and start talking. It'll be so much easier when I can key in on where they are and when to slow down and sneak in, and the spikes might be kicked out to be more callable. No one was interested in my cold call setups.

Still alive and kickin. Ended up putting off the move to Alaska but we did move further North. I've got a fistful of tags - 2 either sex elk, mule deer, whitetail, and the rest of the Sportsmans pack. Going to see how many I can stick with arrows. Might have to resort to the smoke pole. Hunting Sept through December as necessary. Good luck everyone!

I start hunting here in SW MT Sept 3rd.
My season is getting cut short as I took a job in Idaho. I'm pulling out of camp on 9-24 and start work on 9-26. I will have to make a couple trips down there somewhere in the middle of my time off. I'm glad for the new job, but the timing sucks!
