Hey rifle hunters, what’s your set up for wapiti hunting this year? Rifle make, caliber, scope, ammo?

1960's Savage 99F. 308
Aperture sights (firesight bead, Williams base, Merit adjustable aperture)
165 grain Federal Premium Trophy coppers.

If you have not tried ap sights you might be surprised at their effectiveness and foul weather ease. The Merit adjustable aperture is fantastic. Very useful. Very accurate.

Lefty, I used to own a A bolt in 7mm08. Super rifle. Did kick a little though...

I have never seen an elk through a rifle scope, but i'm sure I will some day, and will use it as an excuse to buy a rifle I had for a short time, but got rid of. for anything 400yds and in (plenty capable beyond, but if I planned on longer shots, my choice would be different) I think the PERFECT elk rifle is a Browning BAR in 338wm, add some Barnes TTSX, and top with a 3X9 VX3 and you're set!

the 338 is a great elk cartridge, and in that BAR, it is pretty dang pleasant to shoot, I had the version without the BOSS brake, I don't think it's needed.

I have seen several killed with a rifle, from 12 ga slug guns to 338's, like anything, if you pick your shots, and execute them well, a 270 or 308 will get the job done in short order, get a bull at a steeper angle, or accidentally hit the shoulder, those big cartridges shine.
.
I have a 7 mag, it's my deer rifle, and would work just fine for elk, but it wouldn't be my top choice for elk.

a 338wm is manageable to shoot, and will handle any situation in the elk woods, and they are easy on meat with a tough bullet.

It isnt my choice either I bought my 7mm as an all around gun.

a smaller 120 gn 7mm for antelope
140 gn for deer.160 for elk and 175 for moose
I just wish the 7mm had a fraction bigger of the selection .30 has; I would like to load a 90-100 gn bullet for antelope and coyotes something a little more fun and easy on the shoulder to zip out there!

Lefty, try .243 and 100 grn nosler partitions. Deadly on deer and speed goats. Largest whitetail I ever killed dressed out at 265lbs. So it is effective on those bigger bodied deer. (No, not elk. Deer) But my shooting was never long range, so consider that in your research.

mine was bought as an all around gun as well, if I could do it over again, I would have bought the same rifle. don't get me wrong, I love my 7mag. was considering a 300wm, but the 7mm is quite a bit nicer on the shoulder, and cheaper factory ammo, and will kill anything I hunt as dead as it gets :D

my next will be a 25-06.... then the 338 will follow.... so much for only having one rifle

Remington 700 in a 300 ultra mag. Flat shooting gun I put a muzzle break on it so it kick like a 243. On top is a 3x9 Leopold would like to get a.little more zoom for those long range shots but I switched to stick and string and it sits in the corner of the gun safe. I reload my own and like to change things up and haven't found the perfect formula yet.

Interarms Whitworth Express in .375 H&H
Leupold 4X compact scope
270 gr. Hornady Interlock over 71 gr RL-15.

If I end up climbing high and possibly shooting across canyons, I'll swap it out for a lighter Browning A-Bolt Stainless Synthetic in 7MM Rem Mag with a Leupold 3X9 scope and 165 gr Nosler Partitions. I'd rather shoot the .375 though. Maybe next year I can afford to upgrade the scope on it.

Most of the time I shoot a savage 110 in 7 mag 175 gr Remington core lok for elk 150 gr for deer. Although I also have a marlin XL7 in .270 that I bought for the wife and kids to use. It's a great deer and elk gun using 150 gr. loads. That what I shot my elk with this year, it' a much lighter gun than my savage, and easy to pack around the mountains. It's also a tack driver at the range. I have Nikon 3-9 scopes mounted on both.
