Not too shabby for an old man and old mule

Postby saddlesore » 10 22, 2018 •  [Post 1]

No calling, just getting up early, 2 hours in the saddle to 10,5oo feet in the dark climbing on foot to about 11,000 for another 1/2 mile. Being quiet, watching the wind, and putting the bullet where it needs to go.

Don't know why photos are cut off .They show up fine with reduced sized when I open them.

Thanks for the pictures. Congratulations on a fine elk. It appears your mule got some well earned quality hay as a reward.

I’ve found that mine are only cut off when I look at them on my phone. If I use the home computer they aren’t.

Dang Saddlesore you’re a pretty handsome cowboy. Congratulations on a nice shooter! Have you ever tried tying a stick from beam to beam on the underside of the rack so it rests on the back of the saddle pads so the back end of the rack rides higher? I’ve found it to be a good way to rig up a longer beamed rack.

The photo with the horns on Roscoe was after they got untied. A fellow was helping me and got anxious.I didn't complain as there was no way I could left those hind quarters off myself.I barely got them on, and that was with the mule on a side slope. The first one was tough, but I figured I could maybe slip the 2nd hind up over the top of the sawbuck and let it slide into the pannier. Darn pannier wasn't open enough and the quarter slid on by and slid down the mountain about 30 feet.Try carrying a 70 pound hind quarter back up the hill at about 11,000 feet when you are already tired. I'd cut and rest, cut an rest.I shot him at about 7:30 and finally had the first load on at 11:30.

The bigger ones fit down over each side of this little mule.Smaller racks I use the stick.

BTW,this was on public land, Wilderness area. About 4 miles back in.I did solo this year. These two mules are better company than some of my hunting pards over the yeras, except for maybe Luke Kessler. There 's a guy that is fun to go with.

Nice Work Vince!

Did you tie another bull up for me to shoot next Sept? Hope you left him plenty of slack on the rope.

next year we are both in that pic!
You have plenty of tread left on those tires.......

There was 5x traveling with him and a young spike that should be a raghorn next year. Next day saw two more 5x's when packing out.

I want t o go down next summer and cut a shooting lane through those some whips.I already had one,but in the wrong direction.
That stock trail up the mountain had been totally cleared

I do no not know just what Saddlesore does or even what he knows, but it is plainly evident he can still get it done. I would guess he hardly breaks a sweat when he is out hunting.

"I was just sitting there munching on a piece of jerky, and guess what started to walk by?"------"I just happened to be in the right spot."
In years long gone I used to hear those lines or something very similar, and I thought the old guys were giving me a line. But it was true. I had nothing to show for my efforts but sore feet, sore legs and just about everything else that could hurt was in crisis mode. And I was in excellent shape. It's disgusting for sure. :D
