Heading out tomorrow

Postby Jhg » 11 12, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Colorado 4th rifle. 5 days. I still have to load up my truck camper, stock its cupboards w/food. I have a fever (not the elk variety) last 3 days hoping it breaks tonight so I can get back to normal. My gal isn't too happy about it since my main contribution around the house has been being curled up in a ball under a pile of blankets or getting short with the kids. She thinks I am nuts hunting when I am sick. No sympathy needed. Most of you would prob do the same.

I don't know if I would go out sick. I am to much of a wimp. Best wishes and post a picture of your critter when you can.
P.S. Maybe I will take a picture of some axes and the hatchet for your other thread here in a day or two. :D

Good luck this week! Plenty of snow @ higher elevations, so they should be migrating. Hunting w a cold, etc is not that fun, but would you rather be sick @ home?

I think some fresh air is just what the doctor ordered. Good luck. Be safe.

DayQuil, saved me on a Minnesota bear hunt a few years ago. Good luck and be careful.

On my archery hunt this year I woke up puking on the last morning. My partners had both quit due to poor conditions. I had the same thought others have stated: "I can either go hunting while feeling sick, or lay here while feeling sick and sorry for myself". I went hunting while my partners slept and killed my elk in the very last hour of my hunt. Go hunting!

The mountains of Colorado are nothing to mess around with. Especially if you are sick to begin with. I think your better half might be right. You are nuts!!! But on the other hand, I hope you can get to feeling better before the Saturday opener. Good luck to ya!

Well, I'd like to tell a lie, but its tag soup. The first two days I was so weak I wouldn't have been able to get an elk out anyway, let alone make a good shot. In the future I may not be so determined to go up when sick. Elevation gain, the work it takes to prepare and load the vehicle and the drive, collectively wiped me out for the first night and opening day. But the elk were not there anyway so it made little difference and I can't put the blame on my health.

This is a land bridge that crosses a very large and wet boggy area about a mile across. The elk use it and its a nice place to hunt

This is the view from my blind. Have shot two elk from here.

By final day it was 0* and that was a good thing. The elk will come off the high country and use the travel tunnel I hunt as they access the parks that typlify the valley. I have tagged out every year in this unit hunting exactly like I was hunting this year, but it was not to be. Just one more day. Just one more day. But the elk were not there and you can't shoot an elk if its not there.

We had some cold, some snow and some wind- all in all, perfect winter elk hunting.

Another view of the blind showing my rifle hung in its place.

My consolation will be hunting down a nice used autoloading shotgun for bird and duck hunting. Looking at the Ithaca 51 Featherweight.

Some of the area has nice South slope opens where elk like to graze. These border timber glades and travel tunnels the elk use to go back and forth from up above tree line and into the lower parks, depending on the weather. Not a great place to hunt earlier in the season though. It is strictly a migratory travel zone. Not to say they won't be there earlier, but not many and not often.

Appreciate the report. Even without going boom, rest assured you M-99 relished the outing. No tracks or sign? Glad you recovered enough to make the rounds.
