The Raghorn And The Cow

Postby Swede » 12 14, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Two elk are walking in on you totally oblivious to your presence. A chip shot is about to present itself and you can take either one. Both will go 300# hanging quarters, so which is it? Which one goes home with you, and which walks on?

If the cow has a body the same size as the raghorn I'm thinking it's old. Can't eat horns, but the young bull's meat will be more tender.

Well, if it were where I usually hunt in Montana, I would try to take both, fill my general tag with the bull, and my "b" tag with the cow. I have yet to actually carry this out, though I have shot 2 cows within seconds of each other.

Before I started this discussion, I thought about it and was undecided. The bull is no trophy, so that is not a factor. The cow is likely a little older, but speaking from experience, she should be great to eat. The bull will have a little more bone. If the shot opportunity is good, I think I will drop the cow.

First clear shot. I’m more interested in feeling the freezer. If this is our “normal” location Swede, we both know never to pass a cow even on opening morning, it may be the only opportunity all season!

Bulls only, I cannot shoot a cow. If an area I was hunting didn't have any elk I'd move on!

No brainer. Spikes are illegal where I hunt. So if I have to pick one it would be the cow. But in reality, I'd let them both pass and just enjoy the moment.

Really depends on the type of hunt im on. More than likely shoot the first one that gives me an opportunity.

I haven't hunted an area that allows cows to be taken for a while, but..... I'll regress to that type of allowance/season and say that the cow walks unless its the last day of my hunt. At this stage of my elk hunting career I'm only interested in antlered critters. That said, that attitude has resulted in an absence of elk meat in my freezer for the long winter on more than a few occasions :?.

RJ, when the Washington elk hear about that new smoke pole of yours and see Big Red out with mudder tires on, they will head for the deepest timber available in the Olympic N.P. You won't have to worry about antlers or if it is bald.
