Average Shot Range/Distance?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 04, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Sure, some of it is dependent on the type(s) of areas you've hunted in over the years, but if you were to average the distances..... what are they for the elk you've brought home for dinner?

Archery - XX yards.
Rifle - XX yards.
Muzzle Loader - XX yards.

ML 50-80 yds.
Rifle 100-200 yds.
Archery 35 yds (n of 1).

I did a range instead of an average, because average does not equal actual range on any of my shots, not even close. For example, the average of 50 and 150 is 100. 100 is twice as far as 50, 2/3 of 150, misleading. Probably obvious that I have a little time on my hands tonight.

Exactly  Thanks for naming it, I'll tell my shrink. I never considered OCD, the hypochondria keeps me pretty busy.

Paul - in your "range of shots" - what do you do different when hunting with trad gear? Of course I'm assuming your range is reduced compared to your compound. Similar setups, just wait for them to get closer, etc...???

Mitch, not much! In the right situation I am comfortable to 40 yards with the longbow. So far between my Son's shots & mine I'd put the average distance at just under 20 yards. The farthest shot to date for either of us was 30 yards & a couple in the 14 yard range. My setups & calling do not differ at all. -- With the compound we find in most encounters we could have had a good chance at taking these elk with our trad gear.

These days we just don't have the time to give all the attention shooting trad requires so have used the compound the last few years, although my Son did take a bull last year with a longbow, it was his first with one, he usually shoots a recurve. Here's that bull. OTC Idaho bull I called in for him. I called this bull in using the Slow Play Breeding Sequence, he was bedded with 1/2 dozen cows & I called him away from them, took 20-25 minutes of coaxing in early Sept. we were hunting dark timber.

Paul - thank you for that response. I really enjoy shooting my longbow and want to take it out west this year but was just hung up on the whole "out of range" deal. I'm accurate to 20 yards with trad and accurate out to 80 with my compound but have a self imposed max shot distance on live animals of 50 yards. Just hate to prepare all year for elk and then have a 40 yard shot and be holding my longbow :-)Although that would still be an awesome experience.

Ok men, carry on here, didn't mean to divert the thread.

OK, I'll qualify my earlier statement with hard numbers. First I will mention that I hunt elk in timber, preferably dark timber. When elk hunting more open terrain we wait until the elk get into cover before working them with calling that is JUST for them! My Son & I have put down 63 elk in 29 years, all but 2 were on OTC public land hunts, the two were draw units on public land & we did it ourselves like the others. The average distance with our longbows, recurves & compounds has been 23 yards. We like being proficient to 60 yards so practice out to 80 yards fairly regular. This makes those 40- yards chip shots!
