Elk Hit by Train in Southeast Idaho

Trains can a do kill a lot of big game in Idaho.
An area I hunt the railroad had to redo some small bridges this fall . Last winter trains killed 8 bull moose on a 1 mile section of rail road.

In the early morning hours of Friday, January 25, a herd of elk was hit by a train traveling between Montpelier and Soda Springs. No people were injured in the collision.

Conservation officers from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game arrived at the scene and dispatched injured animals as well as coordinated the removal of the carcasses from the railroad tracks. A total of 31 elk were killed of which ten were salvageable and distributed to members of the community. A local citizen volunteered his time and front-end loader to load salvageable elk into people’s trucks.
Trains hitting herds of big game animals are not common occurrences in the region.

Man that’s a bummer. Last winter a friend was driving to work when he saw a herd of elk between the highway and the frozen lake. I guess they ran down there when some cars came by. On his way home he saw the holes in the ice. The elk decided walking the ice was safer than going back up and crossing the road and the majority of them drowned. 31 found dead floating and they said probably 20 more died. All cows and calves. Sad.
