Game Planner Maps 2019

Postby Game Planner Maps » 04 17, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Greetings,

Since 2019 hunt planning is in full swing I wanted to announce a few changes on my website.

I had to remove the online interactive maps due to a cost increase. However, you can still access the maps on the www. Just paste one of the following URLs into your browser. I have no idea how long these links will be available but your are free to use them.
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/arizona.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/colorado.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/idaho.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/montana.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/newmexico.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/nevada.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/utah.php
http://maps.gameplannermaps.com/geomoose/wyoming.php

Digital maps are now delivered directly from Avenza Maps. This makes for easier loading to your device.
I've added a lot of maps for the most popular states and units
New Mexico - https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1245/ ... =newmexico
Colorado - https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1245/ ... y=colorado
Wyoming - https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1245/ ... ry=wyoming
Montana - https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1245/ ... ry=montana
Arizona - https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1245/ ... ry=arizona

Custom maps are still available, nothing has changed there. Beat the rush, right now is a great time to order a custom map.

Sweet....thanks for the reminder/heads up Ed. GP hard maps and Avenza versions for phones are absolutely priceless. I have several of them for various areas and will be getting more.

I am just curious here. What is GPM's source for what is shown on summer elk density? What is your source for the springs you show? Have they been verified?

Mother Nature can’t even verify springs Swede. I guess if you are lower country water sources may be more consistent. But in the hills things can vary. Wet years and dry years can definitely be different. I’ve revisited springs that were once running great to find barely a wet spot. But if you know how to develop a water source you can usually make them usable.

I’ve been using Game Planner for years. I love having custom maps two sided and waterproof. No more maps tearing in half where they’ve been folded either.

That is odd. I can show you a lot of springs where you, guaranteed, could go and sit over a water hole next September. I don't care if there has been a drought or a deluge. They are there. I can also go on an internet topographic map site and see springs marked, and get the coordinates only to find there has never been any spring in that area. There are springs that are perennial and have been reliable for well over a hundred years. Many of the better ones were named. There are springs that dry up some years. There are springs that regularly dry up in the late summer.
If GPM's source for showing springs are the old USGS maps, they are not reliable. If their source for elk density is the land management agency's (Forest Service) GIS, then it is just common information placed on a map being sold to the public. If their springs are from the USGS topographic maps, then I would rather they leave them off. I would add the ones I have verified on the ground and consider useful.
Their maps are reasonably priced, but are they just durable or do they have some especially helpful information? Also some plastic maps tend to fade or the map graphics wears off easily. Is their map going to last in the field without extraordinary care? Also can you write on the maps?
Just curious.

As far as whether springs can be intermittent I think you just said the same thing as me. As far as someone who sells maps in every mountain state it’s not realistic to expect them to get boots on the ground in all of the spring locations is it?

I can vouch for the quality of the maps. They don’t fade or wear off. They are tear proof and extremely durable. Yes you can write on them. When you custom order you can add any layers you want. You can get topos with satellite images on top. Or straight up satellite images with topo lines. Lots of options. Pick your map boundaries. Have your name printed on the bottom or the name you choose for the map.

No one thinks a bunch of cartographers are going out and putting any boots on the ground. The information would likely only be available on GIS or quality satellite imagery.
I feel so limited living and hunting in a State not covered by GPM. I still have to take and fold a F.S. topographic map or USGS map and place it in a Zip-loc bag. If I want my name on it I have to write it there myself. What a disadvantage.

Write it yourself! Man that’s terrible Swede.

If you think that’s bad some people stay in one place all day never actually pursuing elk. There’s a disadvantage. Not even a change of scenery. I bet they’d enjoy having a good map to look at just for the entertainment factor. A good waterproof one could even be made into a roof for stationary hunting like that.

All joking aside, I use maps and journals as a tree stand hunter more than I ever did hunting on the ground. I have waypoints on the computer in case anything ever happens to my GPS. In addition there is a description of what each waypoint is like. I jeep a record of elk kills including date and time of day. I wish I had more information of close encounters. Over time you can start to see a pattern for different areas if you document these things and it helps for future hunts.
I have a Forest map in a semi-desert area that is dotted with about 100 verified water holes and wallows that are numbered for reference to paper and computer data. I have a bunch more waypoints to check out this next July on my scouting trip on another Forest.

The springs are derived from the USGS Hydrology dataset. I can easily omit the springs if someone does not want them on a map.

The game range info is courtesy of the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (2014). They collected it from state game agencies. Almost all of it is available to the public now, if you know where to look and how to use it.

The maps are printed on a synthetic poly film. Its similar to the stuff used on billboards. The Ink is waterfast and UV resistant, In addition to that, the film has a coating that also keeps the ink water fast.
When I was shopping for print media I performed a torture test on a number of media types. I printed maps on all samples and threw them in my pool for a week in mid summer Phoenix.
The stuff I use came out on top. The ink had bled and faded a little but the paper was still very in tact. I was pretty impressed considering the UV index is usually around 10 that time of the year and its a chlorine pool.
Being a map guy, one of my pet peeves was maps that would tear from pulling out of a pack or repetitive folding. Granted I've only been using the stuff for 4-5 years, but I've not had single complaint of a map tearing or developing a hole on a compound crease. As far as writing on them. I recommend ball point pen or sharpie/marker.

Also, I have interactive maps for OR and WA. I make maps for those states too, just added them to the website.

I personally work with every client to give them the map they need. I start by making the map I would take if it was my hunt. When I'm happy with the map,the client gets to approve it. If he wants something else we work together to make the right map.

I can make any hunting map in most any place you want to hunt. I'm always happy to consult if you have questions.
