What’s in your pack

Postby Elkhunttoo » 08 10, 2020 •  [Post 1]

We are almost to opening day. Let’s all do a run down of what we are going to be packing with us when we hit the field. Maybe a few things will get mentioned to help us all remember to take them.

Needed to go thru the pack anyway (it’s always stored pretty much ready to go but Elktember is right around the corner). Ok, deep breath....... Exo Mountain Gear K3 4800. Left belt pouch Lowrance GPS, right belt pouch Sig Kilo 1250 RF. LID - Map of area hunted,; trail kit - flag ribbon and peroxide; 2 headlamps; Canon Elph camera and ClipShot; tags for state hunted; barrel condoms (tiny rubber doodads for end of ML/rifle barrels); Gerber dime multi-tool. Main pack - external, lower pockets, light pair of gloves; bladder sleeve, Platypus Hoser 3-liter; first aid kit (various fix-em-up-gear); kill kit - VIAM Outdoors game bags, Outdoor Edge replaceable blade knife, one fixed blade knife (rotated depending on mood - Elktrack, WW Custom, Gerber), plastic drop cloth, thin rubber gloves X 2 pairs, para-cord X 4 20’ lengths, one pack hand wipes, 1 chem light, SOG collapsible saw, tiny Gatco BH and knife sharpener, 2 black heavy duty sacks. And of course snacks for the day. Calls are in my pants pocket, ElkNut tube over the shoulder. That’s the day hunt config; obviously it changes dramatically for pack in hunts.

Many of the same things these other yahoos have but also wind powder and sometimes a little pocket stove for mountain house meal prep. I often throw in a pair of dry socks as well. If we are hunting griz country, I add bear spray and a pistola. Once in a while I throw in a bottle of Gatorade cuz it tastes so good if it is hot out. If it is going to be below freezing, make sure you have a sleeve for your water bladder tube or it will freeze. Ask me how I know!

I also will take a Riesen's dark chocolate in my side pouch. All day my challenge is to eat that sucker right before I have the highest, hardest hill to climb. Last time I hunted with my dad, I was down to my last two. I had saved them for days. I soooo was looking forward to their chocolatey goodness. Melt in your mouth happiness. An energy boost like no other. We are looking up at a big climb. I very reluctantly ask him if he wants one. he says yes (Dang it!!). i had over one of my last two remaining little prizes. he pops it into his mouth...and promptly spits it out on the ground and says, "I don't like it". Closest I have came to second degree murder in my life.

1 7mm Remington Magnum round
1 knife
1 clean pair of wool underwear

Thats all I need ;)

I'll work up a real list later. The one thing I see missing from others so far is electrical tape. Better than duct tape for woodsy fixes as far as I'm concerned. I've heard leukotape is awesome too, but have never used it.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.
