Elk hunting instead of????

Postby Lefty » 03 24, 2013 •  [Post 1]

This is my 4th year archery elk hunting,.. What were you doing other Septembers before you began archery elk hunting?
Labor day weekend we were always at the-in-laws cabin. We were hunting grouse. My wife and I would go up the mountian early looking for road shooters on the ATV. Later we would take the kids and dogs and hike down hill
Then later in September we would hit Blackfoot Resiviour to camp and hunt for cranes, ride the horses and ATV
With jobs, college my kids are busy and I had a bit more time to then go after elk
Thinking back 10 15 and 20 years its had been grouse in September

It is hard for me to remember, but I think I was working. The kids were in school, and I was waiting for the rifle season.

I have only hunted elk with a bow for over 30 years. Before that, our deer season opened in Aug and ended sometime in Sept. So I would say bowhunting for deer in Sept.

Endurance horse riding/racing. Still what my wife enjoys, and so the horses stay in great shape.

Dove hunting when I lived in Nebraska. Fun shotgunning, for sure.

Treestand (archery) hunting for deer.

When in HS, I used to hunt upland birds.

The only September I was in Colorado and did not archery elk hunt, I went fly fishing. Awesome month for it! I definitely miss it but archery elk is better!

Fort Collins, CO Sprint Triathlon in early September and biking for the rest of the month.

I was not a hunter until I got addicted to elk 6.5 years ago. I have only done 3 sprint triathlons and 2 half marathons since elk and archery took over my warmer months. Instead of summer races, I now camp or backpack for scouting. The half marathons were in December and January to avoid elk hunting season.

Riding bulls! Usually spent around 8 to 10 days in early Sept at St, Tite Quebec, the 2nd largest rodeo in Canada, when I left there I was hitting rodeos here in the states.

I used to hunt elk in November.
Either Sex tags and we shot them up every fall for over 10 years
Lots of big herds, lots of fun.

I got tired of the cold and snow and migrated to Muzzleloader deer/elk during September in the mid 90s

That lasted a couple years and then I drank the 'Kool Aid'.... :)

I've bowhunted in September since I was old enough to drive. Before that I guess I rode my bike to fish and played football. I really can't remember much about September "BB" (Before Bowhunting).

Either dove hunting or fishing for speckled trout and red fish since no other hunting seasons are open around me in September.

Never missed opeaning day for whitetails here in North Carolina until last year ( my first elk hunt), other than that fly fishing tailrace waters in western NC and eastern Tenn is always good that time of year. Good Lord willing I will miss every opeaning day here for whitetails because I'll be chasing the great wapiti in the west
