Do You Practice?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 29, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Just a question. Do you practice your elk noises in between elk seasons?

Some answer options ;)

A. Yes, I practice year round.
B. Yes, but I don't start till later in the summer.
C. Not really, my elk sounds are solid so why mess with it.
D. No, but I should as I'm pretty sure I sound like a wounded pine squirrel.
E. Other answer.
F. RJ must be bored so he's starting a new thread/poll.

A, i try and practice as much as i can. even if its just to annoy the wife for awhile. which i found that a good cow call doesnt bring her in to me as id like, nor does a bugle with chuckles. i uasually end up just grunting at her in frustration. i also found out i can get my son to jump to his feet from a sound sleep with a solid screem. i almost hit the floor laughing. at least my wife found that funny.

I am either a B or D myself. No problem though. Even a wounded squirrel sound is good. It just might bring in a coyote.

A. Year around, it's my job! You'd think wives would get used to it, but I can say they don't, not in my house! (grin) Even after 37years together it still annoys them, it's OK sometimes I pretend not to hear the complaining! (grin) Gotta try out those new reeds you know!!!

b. after years of turkey hunting i find making a cow call super easy. im ok with a bugle but tend to not get the nasally sound in it, but for location bugles im ok. what i need to work on in inflection. getting that next step out of my sounds that takes it from a elk sound to a elk. thats the hard part.
i can talk turkey and duck with the best of them. at least in my opinion.
goose calling on the other hand, i beyond pitiful.

It would be a D. I should practice more often. Heck last year I forgot my elk bugle at home.

I suppose I'm a B & E. I'll tune up a week or so before the season. But when I hear something new that you other guys are doing, I'll break out the calls and give it a try.

Paul: You better hope Brenda doesn't read this thread! LOL!

E. After hints from 2 of you, last month was the first time that I actually got a half way decent sound out of my mouth reed.

I am now practicing weekly.

I still need to try other reeds. I could not use Primos. I have the All-Star to accommodate my small mouth. It was suggested by Paul.

So far I would have to go with A. Each week I have used a different call still trying to figure which mouth reed I will be using for the upcoming season.
I use the one that I believe to sound the best while testing others out as well. I think my collection is at 6 or 7 different reeds. :? and counting.....
