Elk Are Fast

Postby JohnFitzgerald » 04 14, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I would always make fun of those guys on TV that got pinned down by elk. My philosophy was if they practiced the "quick draw" they'd have the bull. As not to be one of them, I practiced quick shooting often.

A couple years ago I called in a spike that ran right by my shooter and straight to me. At 30 yards the bull dropped his head and pretended to feed. Having an arrow knocked, no cover between him and I, this was my time to show those TV boys how it's done. Needless to say, I will never hack on those guys again.

Who else has thought they are faster than the Wapiti?

Lesson learned: Always stick to cover!

I had a spike walking straight at me, he stoped about 20 yards turned and started walking a circle around me. As he walked behind a fir tree I drew my bow but he must have been watching me through the tree as he explodedout of there and almost ran over my hunting partner that did not know there was an elk in the area. Neither one of us even come close to getting a shot.

I draw slow sitting on my rear this year the same bull watched as I drew ( and released an arrow) 2 times
Year before the big bull watched as I drew on him, and 2 cows and a calf 13,14, and 17 in the wide open sitting on my rear

That guy has a big "set" is all i can say. Having an animal like that, that close and keep your cool. I've had small whitetail bucks at a yard away had you just hope and pray they do't drop their head at you.

But lefty is right i feel it is better to draw very very slow then to speed draw........unless your one of those guys guys who need to aim for the moon to get your bow drawn.....then you SOL but if you can draw with your bow facing him you normally have a half a chance.

Great VID David.. I don't believe I've seen that one before. I was waiting for big nasty to put his rack down and charge that suspicious object to make it move :o Better yet would have been a popping grunt that blew the guy's hat off his head. He should have drawn when he saw the bull coming in but who knows the circumstances, he may not have heard/seen it until the video shows the big boy appear. For me, oftentimes, I don't even remember drawing... it just seems to occur.. weird, I know.

The first Year I hunted Colorado, I had done so much running and training, I thought I could run down an elk.

Like I said, that was the FIRST Year......only!
