Anyone headed to the great state of MT this year, or maybe you already live there? (lucky dogs) ;)

Can't wait for Sept. Big bulls are already calling my name! It's going to be another great year.

Heading to region 3 with a general tag in my pocket for the first 10 days of the season as of right now. I would like to go later but my doing what my schedule allows. Really looking forward to it. Been in that part of the country for quite a few things, but now I get to add bow hunting to the list.

If general tags are unlimited, why do they sell preference points for them? I'm referrring to non-resident tags btw.

They are not unlimited for non-residents. It wasn't very long ago that drawing a big game combo tag was a 50/50 endeavor. When they raised the price roughly 50% (via a bill passed by the people in 2011 I think) to $1050 or so, demand went down and become very close to supply. There was actually a surplus of both deer, elk and elk/deer combo tags last year. This year it appears that demand has basically reached supply and a few unlucky non-residents did not draw general tags.

The purpose of buying the point prior to the last two years was that after 2 years your odds of drawing a combo tag was nearly 100% with one additional point.

General elk licenses are $809. There are leftover licenses again this year and soon they will start selling them 1st come 1st served. They used to be $633 for General Draw and $1195 for the outfitter sponsored which are no longer available.

Remember... wolf licenses are only $50 down from $350 and instead of 1 per hunter you can buy 5 over the counter.

They are not decided on just yet based on the website.

Ct-If its like it was last year and the year before here is a tenative outline. Starts in September with archery season. That is an archery wolf season. Runs till mid October. Then in 2012 rifle wolf picked up a week before general elk and deer. I think that was the 15th of October. That season runs till the end of February. December 15thish was when trapping started. That also ran through the end of February. I think last year the trappers killed almost the same number of wolves in 2.5 months as hunters killed in 5 months. You have to take a trapping class which was nearly impossible to get enrolled in.

Do any of you bother carrying a wolf tag while bow hunting elk? Seems unlikely to have one that close.

Before the tags where available a friend of mine was archery hunting for elk in western MT. He said that three of them in the group could have shot wolfs at less then 20 yards. Hopefully some of those wolfs have been thinned out.

I carry one just for the sheer luck it could happen. Two years ago I called in a wolf while I was bugling at a bull. I was never close enough to him or had enough time to get a shot but it could happen for sure.

I plan to get one since they are now $50. I wouldn't have for $350 though. Are the archery tags transferable to gun later in the year?

Had to laugh.. Aron answered CTdad's question: Don't buy a tag and one will stroll by at 20 yards.
