Do you cut you diaphragm calls?

Postby mandrroofing » 05 05, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Is it normal to cut the mouth call down to fit better?

I don't cut em, but I do bend them a bit to get the amount of latex tension that I like.

Absolutely. I cut all of my diaphragm calls until they feel comfortable, I get much better sounds that way. Try it. Don't be afraid to cut away a lot of material, calls are cheap, a freezer full of elk meat is priceless!

I've cut, bent twisted, pinched, whatever it took to make it sound right. Then thrown away the rest.

Nope! I never have to cut or bend any of them. Lots of guys do though. Guess it all boils down to what ever it takes to make it work for you.

I haven't started chewing on the edges of mine yet, but Elknut recommends it, so I am going to try that this year with those that do not have the palate plate. I can make them work with no cutting or chewing, but it is more difficult.

I have experimented with cutting them but didn't really work for me. I do bend them for fit to get the sounds that I want.

Years ago I found it necessary to trim the old school reeds a bit for my narrow pallet but since I started using Rockies reeds like the Mellow Yellow, Raging Bull, Challenge (old scream n tormentor) Hot Coaxer, I've not had to trim or reshape even one in the last 6-7 years!

Everyone's mouth is different, there are some I need to bend to fit better, some just fit right out of the package and some I can't get to work for me no matter what I do... Once I have one really tuned well though it's like a pare of old jeans, it gets a special spot so it doesn't get mixed up with the backups ;)
