Average Age of Your Group

Postby CrazyElkHunter » 05 10, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Been bowhunting elk for a long time, and curious what the average age of your hunting buddies in elk camp are.
In our group of 4, the oldest is 64 from Texas, followed by 63, myself 62 and the youngest 56 from Calif., which puts our average over 60.
Most of the camps near us are in there 30's and 40's.

I can't seem to get a "camp" going. I bowhunt along and rifle hunt with my father in law, but he's out of shape and I don't consider it hunting, more like armed hiking.

One buddy that I occasionally link up with is 32, I'm 27.

Years ago we had 4-5 in the group, we've trimmed our camp down to my son & I, we hunt with others throughout the month but we are the camp most of the time! 34 to 58! (grin)

Our average age between 3 of us has been 50, but now that my 16yr old son is with us this year, that brings the average way down :)

Why did you bring this up. There is three of us that hunt together and the youngest is 55 which is not me. I added all three up and devided by three and came up with sixty four for the average. Makes me feel old but I think I am in better shape then my partners so I guess that is ok.

It depends who is in camp as it varies from time to time, but it is somewhere from 48-62. I am always the oldest now, as I will be 66 this Sept. It seems like it was such a short time ago I was the kid tagging along.

I will be 25. My 2 cousins will be 24 and 21. The three others are around 50 not sure of exact age. So our average would be around 35

For elk camp, I'm 26, my buddy is 29 and our dads are 52 and 50 respectively. So 39.

I hunt with a lot of other guys my age, but I wouldn't consider them part of my "camp" as they are more like aquaintances when it comes to hunting.

Thanks guys! The comic side is coming out! That's what I was after. Seems the older we get the funnier we think we are! Our group has changed through the years. It used to be myself, 2 brothers and a friend from Texas and 1 friend from Georgia. About 6 years ago, it narrowed down to myself and the 2 brothers. One of the brothers died at the age of 65 in my arms in elk camp in 2010. In 2011 it was just myself and the one brother. We filled both our bull tags that year and my buck tag. Last year, 2 old friends asked to join our group for there 1st elk hunt. One is 63 and the other 56. Your never to old to start elk hunting, or should I say elk camping!

One guy "Redbird" is 60. A grumpy old Vietnam vet with a sense of humor dryer than a month old August cowpie. If I told you his real name he'd have to shoot me.

Another guy Leroy is on his 5th year of elkless elk hunting at the ripe old age of 34 after moving to Missoula from Holland MI 10 years ago. I've taught him real well how to carry elk though.

My brother Doug is 45, until opening day of gun (Oct 20) so our average goes up on the 1st day of the season but comes out to 47 right now which is my age!

I had to text Lee just now to ask how old he was and he said "34, young enough to keep carrying your damn elk out for awhile longer" ha ha I didn't even tell him why I asked but good answer right.

In Wyoming last year it was me and a 25 year old. This year me and a 34 year old. See a pattern? I have extra backpacks for those young dudes too.

Just saw this thread for the first time.. Been crooning over my new toy a bit for the past few days, shamefully, not hanging out with my elknut friends. Just got her out of the body shop.. (pic below).. Now, back to business and easeup's thread. It has varied over the years but for some reason, I seem to be the oldest one on the elk trek each year.. odd. For this year, it will probably average out to around 44 if Joe is able to go and Ernie can still join in the hunt. I'll be 54 the 30th of this month (send Cabela's gift certs please.... :D ....), Joe is a bit under 50, and Ernie is a bit over 40 if I remember correctly. Dotman (Tim) will be stuck hunting with me, and, because he surmised I may be on a Smucker's Jelly Jar due my assumed age, he will certainly get a bumper dose of mountain antics by the old guy ;) Looking forward to it.

i was talking to my wife about this earlier, i will kill an elk this year unless im beat mentally. last year i was beat, i would not have been at 25. it just seems the older i get the less it matters what kind of shape im in, and starting at 41 isnt a good idea. i wasted alot of good years.

This year will be my partner's and mine second year in a row when we haven't had any younin's in our party. He'll be 65 yrs, and I'm the younin at 62 yrs. I just retired, and he's still working, go figure. Guess being a single bachelor all my life finally has some advantages along with the most obvious example, lets party down  . When the younin's are in camp they average about 45 yrs, and the elk tend to seek safety areas that neither one of us can climb into or out of without some serious oxygen devices. I guess that's an avantage of being older, we walk slower, hear far fewer elk bugles because we can't hear, and don't spook all the elk out of the country chasing them. We do a lot more planning before going in on an active bugling bull, and if it's not right, we back out. I'm pretty sure the younin's are mostly running and gunning, and having a good time, but I was thinking maybe we should split them up, and have them drag each of us old farts around with them for a day or two. Probably wouldn't end well for us since they would have to see a couple of old guy grasping for air :( , and complaining to boot. :o The most important part about elk camp is that when we are all there, we enjoy each others company, and have a great time around the fire pit each night retelling the events of the day. It just doesn't get any better than that. :D

She's looking sweet RJ 8-)

Just turned 52. Typically my elk hunting buddy has been younger, by about 8 years. I am hunting with a different guy this Season who happens to be exactly 8 years younger.

Physically, I can still run circles around both of them ;) I do plan on covering a lot of ground this time, but also hunting smarter, not harder.

I'm an old dog learning new tricks, thanks to all you Seasoned elk murderers ;)

22 for archery camp as it's usually just me.

If I have buddies come up that average climbs to a stifling 23. No one is older than 24 and none younger than 20.

Good eye.. Yes sir, it's a 68 Chevelle SS tribute. Wasn't born an SS but she's a pretty darn good pretender, right down to factory correct SS badging, in and out, original SS steering wheel, and the roller tach ;) Although Chevy hadn't started dropping 454s in these things yet, mine has a rat 454 in it. Sorry for the diversion of your thread. Probably my old age making me wander

Well the thing of it is there is none of us traveling to CO each year as young as we were when we first started going out there. I seem to be the old guy at 76 and the youngest is 55. I hate to admit it but I keep getting teased about going on an expensive camping trip. They are talking about the cost of an elk license there. Of course we can't seem to make them understand that just the permission to chase them let alone kill one. By the way I don't have time to try and figure out the average age of our group. It seems to change each year. Our two guys from TX won't be coming up this year and maybe one of the other guys son will be coming this year. His first time if he comes. So we will see and when I get ever thing put together I might get to the average.

Thanks Paul. There were a lot of hugs and tears on that bull. His brother died in elk camp the previous year in my arms. He encouraged me to write a story about our hunts and his brother. It was accepted and printed in the 4 th issue of Extreme Elk Magazine.

The plaque and memorial we made where we spread Ray's ashes on the ridge he loved so much. Billy took his 1st bull a few days later. The broken leaf spring we found in camp from Ray's trailer from a few years earlier. We thought it would add to our memory of Ray and the times we shared..
