this probably wont help to much but im loading a 165 hornady gmx in my sons 06. I use the 165 gmx in my 300wsm. the bullet holds together great and weight retention is spectacular. I believe hornady sells a 06 round with a gmx bullet otc.

I killed my first buck with Remington core-lok 180gr from my old 30.06.
I moved to the wide open sage country of Wyoming shortly after that and started to worry about accuracy a lot more.
I found out that my rifle didn't like the Remington core-loks at all!

I switched to Winchester 165gr because they grouped the best out of my 30.06 and I could use the same round for for mule deer, antelope and elk without having to sight in again.

heres the reason I shoot these. this bullet went through a 3/4" piece of plywood, a half rotten log, and smashed into the dirt. my son found this one. these are 165gr bullets. this bullet came out of my 300 wsm @ 150yds. as of this point I haven't ran these through a chrono so I have no idea what the fps is. after seeing this I decided the are my elk bullets

I use hornady superformance ammo in my 30-06, sst for target practice and gmx for hunting. They both have the exact same balistics but the gmx is a much better but more expensive bullet for larger game then a deer.

If I remember correctly the 165gr sst & gmx (interbond) bullets are pushing around 2950fps. They are very accurate out of my gun.

The reason I use sst for target practice is they have the same balastics as the gmx as Jeremy posted above, the reason I don't hunt with them is they lose a ton of weight on impact like 50% or something and just are not good for anything bigger then a deer.

Here is a great resource, the link is for 30-06 but pretty much everything is there with testing done on most bullets from almost all popular cals. http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowled ... field.html

The guy that owns the site is super nice and down to earth, I'm going to use his product to bed and stabilize my sako this winter.

I used Winchester Supreme Accubond in 140 gr a couple years ago with my 7 mag and the fat cow fell where she stood. 300 yard shot.

180gr Accubond, Good BC and good weight retention. The biggest thing to look for is bonded cores. There's a lot of good bullets out there, but there's a lot of not so good bullets too. I've found that 180gr bullets are the most accurate at all ranges (out of my 30-06). I do reload all my ammo, so that might have a little to do with accuracy over factory loads.

another vote for the GMX 165 grain bullet here.

Last year I had to shoot at a cow elk at 538 yards (she was wounded, and about to cross a property line) ... and got got a complete pass-through breaking the off shoulder on the way.

Not much more you can ask of a .30-06 than that!

Well I just mounted a Redfield accu ranger scope on my rifle which is a 300wsm. Using Barnes Bullets VOR-TX 300 WSM TTSX-BT 165gr I had 2 3/4 inch groups at 200yards. and was shooting out to 400yrds with abut and inch to inch 1/2 bigger groups. I am satisfied with that. I shot silver ballistic tips but the groups were not quite as good at the longer ranges, not bad but not as good as the Barnes. I agree with bnsafe but when investing the money on tags and travel and such I guess i just want that little extra security but that's just me.

as far as the superformance, id think the sst would be more for deer, and the interbond for elk, as theyll penetrate better. cool thing is, out of my .300 win mag, the 180 gr sst and 180 gr interbond shoot exactly the same.

I think the most important thing to find out is how well the rifle/cartridge combo shoots. I'd shoot a few different brands that are known for weight retention in the appropriate weight for elk to see which is the most accurate and consistent from your rifle. It's a bit of an investment, but I'd rather shoot the round that I'm confident in any day.
