X Marks the Spot Series 2

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 06 05, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Second series. OK, the stars have aligned and you find youself within 30ish yards of these beasts while bow hunting. You have the wind, and, to this point the bull(s) are unaware of your prescence. You've came to full draw. Now, do you shoot or wait? If you shoot place and "X" on the spot you pick to shoot or simply say wait for a better shot.

If you save the picture to your desktop and open them up with paint or a similar program, you can place an X, O, or whatever showing where you would shoot.. Then, respond to thread with your comments, and, add your adjusted image(s).

Shoot or wait for these elk please. RJ

Tell you what...

All of these elk can be taken. Being successful is knowing the shot and taking it.

I 'recognize' that I can make these shots and wont hesitate

At 30 yds I would not take any of these elk.

At 20 yds or less, I would concur with cnelk.

All tough angles. If I was nervous, felt rushed, or anything was less than perfect then no. But I am more than capable of making those shots at 30 yards, so if everything was perfect and I had time then maybe.

I've had shots at those angles, and passed on all of them many times.
Just a personal thing, elk are tough animals and I have seen to many elk lost from bad, " I Think I Can" shots every year.
I'm going to stick to my personal ethics and wait for a better angle on all 3.

X Marks the Spot Series 2

I don't follow directions well. X means don't shoot and O means shoot here. :)

This is a really risky shot and I think I would be moving to the right just a tad for a better angle. The lungs go back a lot further than most realize (as long as you are high) but this shot may be pushing it for the back lung.

those are all waits for me ( with my bow ) i just know im not good enough to pull that off. ive had one long nasty overnight tracking job on a buck that was pretty tormenting ( animal recovered ) and id rather risk an animal walking away by being conservative on my shots than repeat the experience.

Pass. I've lost a few bulls. I'm not nearly as bloodthirsty as I was when I was younger. Though I practice constantly and can thread the needle on most any makeable shot, I choose to take shots these days with a greater margin for error than these.

I agree with cnelk only one that is iffy to me is the top one on this phone I cant see exactly where that bone is so I may not shoot him.and I wouldn't want to only get one lung by going further left that's the only thing I hesitate for maybe a computer screen it's easier to see

................... irrespective of that distance.
I think I will pass also and wait for a better angle. Elk are big bad and tough and the country they live in is usually very thick and way too easy to lose a bull unnecessarily.

No way on any of the 3 for me. Killed plenty in my life and hate even the chance of wounding an animal. Not mentioned, would be to wait and even if they jump up in super alert mode or try to bolt, you can always try the nervous grunt to stop them and shoot if a better shot.

20 yards or less and I can go with cnelk. Any farther and I wait, no room for error though.

Shooting a longbow I would not take these shots. Although I can easily see how an accomplished compound shooter could.

These are all "no-shot scenarios" for me at 30 yards.
