those threads got me to thinking about elk anatomy. this pic doesn't cover most of the shot placement thread pics but it does give a good overall view. hope it helps some newer people out.

Thanks for the post!

I know one of the things that jumps out at me, (And this pic reminds me) is how far forward and high the shoulder blade actually is. I think far to many of us bowhunters rely upon where the spot is on a 3 D target and figure that should be our aiming point. Far too many of us aim too far back behind the front leg.

In the past, this picture has been viewed many times. The organs are from a moose, transposed on to a picture of an elk. Notice how there is very little room left for the intestines. Also, the lungs on an elk come nowear to going that far back on an elk. But overall, it does give you a good idea of what is in the engine room.

These should help clear some things up... :)

Pretty sure I was the only person at the museum trying to figure out the best kill shot placement on various extinct animals...

I'm a big fan of BB's photoshops ... but ... I truly think that the "guts" layer on that elk needs to be a bit smaller. I think the vertebral bodies should be lower, leaving a bit more room for the vertebral spines, and I think the front shoulder is a bit too far forward. Likewise, I think the liver in the gutted photo layer has "collapsed" a bit backward since the intestines aren't pushing it forward.

All of the above makes the chest cavity appear larger than it really is, IMO, and with all due respect for the producer of the photo -- and then some.

The lungs in the 1st post look to be bigger than any lungs I have taken out of an elk.
Im sticking with the 'pie-plate' size lungs.

I totally agree... guts are too far back, shoulder blade is to far forward, spine is too high.
I've shot a few elk right where that heart is pictured... they must of been deformed or something.
All I ever got was lungs.
Heart is farther forward and lower.

Dead broadside... just go up the middle of the leg and 2/3 from the top... zippo!

I remember when BB put this picture on the bow site, at that time he said that the insides where taken from a moose so that it is not totally accurate.

I figured with my new Kifaru pack, I shouldn't even have to bone it out!

Lol. I remember being at the Smithsonian in DC and looking at the pre-historic elk that's about 3 times bigger than a current elk can get. I kept telling people how much I wish they could get the DNA to bring these things back to life... so I could hunt them. They seemed confused! :)
