I Saved a Baby calf elk from a Pack of Coyotes

Postby Huntography » 06 10, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I'm a hunter at heart but some of my fatherly instincts came over me last week while we were camping.

It's a long story if you want details so I'll just post the link to my blog post here about how I saved a baby newborn calf elk from becoming breakfast for a pack of Colorado coyotes:

You guys ever experience anything like this before?

My pleasure @elkmtngear. It was truly one of those once in a lifetime experiences.

Even more backstory is that this particular area could use a few more elk compared to the other parts of the state. So just doing my part to help keep the population growing.

Nice job! Dang yotes. It may be a good thing that you didn't fire the glock as it may have spooked the cow to the point of possibly abandoning the calf. Although, it would have been nice to take a few of them nasty dogs out ;)

Thanks @Phantom16!

Good point. I was only going to shoot if those yotes were on the calf or the cow. Being as they spooked when they saw me coming, I had no shot opportunity.

But yeah, the more yotes we can take, the less predation of newborn calves.

Thanks @Wapati!

After the yotes took off and the cow settled down and caught her breath, I backed out and watched for about another hour. Durring that time, it seemed like the bull kept barking at the cow and calf to get them into the timber and away from the field edge. The calf was so scared it would not budge at first. It took about 40 minutes before it had the strength and courage to walk with the cow.

Hope that calf makes it as it did have a bit of blood on its neck/head from the coyote bites.

Well done Rudy! Ya did good son! That would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Like you, I hope the yotes keep on going & dont look back but they are crafty when it comes to a meal.I punch every coyote I get the chance to with absolutly no regret. My tally book shows I'm real close to 600 in my ilustrious coyote career. :)

Thanks Buglemaster! While I was in the moment, I had the same feeling, thinking this was a once in a lifetime experience. It's one I'll never forget.

Hope to get a chance at one of them dogs next time I'm out there. Bringing my rifle so I can reach out and touch em ;)

My goodness! You sure have put down a number of dogs. Great stuff right there.

I've been calling yotes for close to 40 years. If you've never tried that, you need to. Not quite as big a rush as calling in a slobbering bull, but having a yote or two coming to the call as fast as they can run will certainly get the cardio going. My son & I won the Midwest coyote calling event 2 years ago. That was special! Back when a good pelt was bringing $75-90, a guy could get motivated pretty easy.Shure do wish that market would come back.

Coyotes gotta eat, don't they? ;) I've seen this several times, but not with elk calves. I've seen it with mule deer and with pronghorn fawns. Once with the mule deer, the doe beat the heck out of of a coyote and it ran off. I saw a pronghorn fawn get shredded by a coyote. I wish I had a better camera each time. Nature isn't all hugs and kisses and made-for-TV happy Disney endings. :?
