Do you 'carry' when scouting?

Postby cnelk » 06 14, 2013 •  [Post 1]

When out scouting, do you carry a sidearm or any other kind of weapon?

This last scouting venture I carried an old Ruger Security Six .357
I like old wheel guns :)

I'm with planebow. When just hiking around in the sticks (scouting) it's "usually" not hunting season and the hikers, campers, and some odd characters are inhabiting the woods. Remember, I live I Washington  I very seldom carry my .444 Ultralite when hunting in WA, ID, or MT. The big boom will always go in to a kill, or, on a track job. Something about following blood through thick alder in bear country prompts me to strap on the Taurus ;)

I nearly always cary when scouting or just kicking around in the outdoors.Generally my 357. When hunting, I generally dont unless there are an abundance of bears in the area.Last season, we were having encounters with multiple bears up close :o & having that pistol in reach was quite comforting.

I carry a .45 Glock - short stack. I've thought about bear spray. It is supposed to be much more effective, but something nice about the security of a gun.

Don't understand you guys carrying those heavy guns! I always was taught that you just have to run faster than 1 person. A .22 mag works well in someone's foot to slow them down! Just having a little fun here. I actually carry a .44 ultra but I do wonder how effective it would be on a crazy grizzly.

Never do, but should. I'm in North Idaho and we have a few grizzlies around. I did have to kill a mountain lion while elk hunting at 20 yards once, obviously I'm not the quickest learner.

Sometimes. To paraphrase a friend: "It's hard to kill a horse with a broken leg using bear spray."

Honestly, that's the main reason I put a firearm in with my stuff ... I'd hate to leave an injured horse tied to a tree while I went for "help."

We did run into a bear yesterday while scouting at about 50 yards. When he saw two horses at a fast trot coming right at him on the trail, it didn't take him long to know he was beat!

YES. i carry my 44 or 45 and bear spray everytime i go into the woods,, wait i leave in the woods..well anyway.Started carrying bear spray before it was legal to carry in Washington, well ok i still carried my 44. anyway. Do to the "polictical" climate these days i feel we need to exersice our rights to carry whether we are in the woods or in the city.
