Would you rather

Postby MTLongdraw » 06 27, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Would you rather shoot a 380" bull from the truck/road?

Or would you rather kill a 5 point bull four miles from the truck and know you earned every ounce and inch of that bull?

I somehow think I could suffer the indignity of getting a good bull on a drive by shooting. I have more than enough experience on the others, so this 380 boy that I could back up to would be acceptable for a change. :D I have never shot an elk from a road for some reason. That includes roads that can only be walked on. I have had two bulls tip over close enough to an open road that I could drive up to them after I tracked them down.

Are you trying to tell us something about your bull, Josh?

I would much rather get my ass kicked pulling a small bull out of the backcountry any day!

After all the little 5x5s I've whacked and humped out...I think I've earned a 380 bull next to the road!

Not going to happen where we hunt...in 15 years I've never seen an elk anywhere near the road...and the biggest bull I've ever seen there was maybe 350 :(

Take the easiest elk. Like others stated, I've earned a close one every now and then.

A wise man one once told me, "hunt where the elk are" so if the elk happen to be next to the road then great I'll hunt there, if the sign takes me on a four mile journey then I'm all for that to. :D

My buddy shot a real nice bull a couple years ago down in New Mexico, from a tree stand over a tank. The little push up dam that formed the tank was also the road. Never thought I would see the day we backed the pickup up to a bull, but we did.

Most of us have to slug it out, year in and out, in some general OTC areas and work for what we get. Nothing wrong with a easy one every now and then.

Way rather earn a backcountry cow on a difficult hunt in a new area than get a lucky chip shot at any animal really. That said, if I ran across a 380 on the Forestry rd on the way to my spot and he let me get out the truck, get my bow, and walk 50 ft from the center of the road (CO law), I'd have to put him on my wall! Just really couldn't be terribly proud of that

I'm an equal opportunity elk hunter, today I'll take the 380" bull by the road, it would be a change since I've never taken a single elk by a road yet! (grin) A guy would be a fool to turn down such a gift from the elk gods! (grin)

Do they taste any different if you shoot them near a road? I doubt it so I will take advantage of any opportunity!

I have killed quite a few elk now that I have 'earned.' If God wanted to bless me with an elk that big right off the road, it's going to die 1000% of the time.

I dream of the day I see a 380 bull by the road. My easiest elk to pack out has been my first elk with a bow. .23 miles from my truck according to the GPS but it was still up the mountain and I was by myself. And I found it late in the day after it being hot so I basically sprinted it and then when I got back to camp skinned all the quarters out. I was up until after 1 after finding the bull at 6 PM. After that elk people look at me funny when I tell them the places I go by myself and pack out elk.

My dream would be to shoot him 55 yards from the road and have him run and go down just uphill of my pickup, so I can back up to the hill and slide that dude in the back of my pickup Whole. I would actually take a few pictures of him like that in the back of the pickup Whole ,so I remember what that looks like!
