Unit 10 New Mexico

Postby elkoholic » 07 05, 2013 •  [Post 1]

My unit is currently closed down due to drought conditions. I'm praying for rain so my scouting excursions can resum. I was escorted off the mountain today unaware of the strict restrictions. Total bummer!! My September hunt is in mother natures hands now!

Sorry to hear that, elkoholic. Unit 10 is one of my favorite here in NM. I went turkey hunting there last spring, and it was ominously dry even then. I hope the monsoon rains make a difference and you can get back out there soon.

This is a decent unit for elk the numbers are not extremely high but they are there... However i turkey hunted this spring saw over 150 head but there is roads everywhere and i mean everywhere this is road hunter heaven .. Good luck getting away from crowds and mtn biker there is elk but gona be hard to find with all the hunters and roads..

focus on water holes if you can find remote one, there is no constant source here.. both lakes in the unit have dried up that being mcgafey and ramah completely dry.. Best of luck . in this unit getting off the beaten path is a must if you do you may be rewarded nicely there are big bulls

Pmixmaster,
I agree with most of what you said on your post, the numbers are up, water is scarce, and there are roads everywhere. I will say that gettin beyond the beaten path isn't impossible. Granted that there are not hundreds of miles of wilderness where you can walk for days and not run into another hunter or cross a road, but you can get beyond the crowd. The eastern part of the unit is good for this. Mcgaffey area, a bit harder. Roads and private land cover a good part of the western part of the unit. These are my stomping grounds and love it. I am not one that likes to road hunt, I like to put my pack on and see what I find on the forest floor. Glad to see people who know the area.
