Elk Rug

Postby Swamp Buck » 07 24, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Has anyone here made an Elk Rug (for the wall or floor)? My parents had my first Whitetail buck cape tanned and even though the rack was not a trophy the hide is still something that I will always have as a momento. I am thinking that if I put down my first elk, I will want to take the cape with me too and at the least get it tanned. What is the best way to cape out an elk for a rug, and how would you go about preserving it for the duration of the hunt? Any pics would be great to see some of your work.

Saw one in Montana a few years back at a sporting goods store. Tanned hide with elk pics burned into hide. It was very handsome. YouTube has videos showing how to.

Flesh as much of the left-over meat that will be on the skin as you can. Salt liberally. Capes and skins can be kept this way for up to several years before a trip to the tannery. All of the Taxidermy suppliers sell home tanning supplies. Stock salt sold at feed stores works great.
