Salt blocks and elk

Postby 1bigpaddle » 08 01, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I hunt around some ranch lands, and I am curious. do salt blocks attract elk like they do deer? I always see deer out where the ranchers have laid the blocks out. But I dont see any elk unless they are there in the dark...Any idea?

Elk frequent salt blocks.
My ranching friend says that elk will take bites out of the salt block instead of licking it
So if you notice bite marks in the blocks, its probably elk

Once salt has been placed in a spot on a the ground, elk will come back to that spot occasionally to eat the dirt that still has minerals

From my experience, elk will be salt'n more when their antlers are growing. Come hunting season they will frequent the licks less but will still come. I've caught elk on my trail cam salt'n both day and night.

A great tip is to make sure you drop both blocks and brine. The brine will leach into the soil quicker which in return brings the elk back to paw at the ground.

As John and Brad wrote, elk will hit on salt especially early in the summer. I have found no significant improvement at my tree stand locations, by having salt around during the archery season. I dig a hole and pour in up to 50# of salt and cover it with about an inch of dirt. The elk will find it and paw it out.

I'm pretty sure that here in Colorado if you hunt over salt it's considered baiting which is illegal. Regardless of whether or not you put the block in the woods.

Baiting for deer and elk is legal in Oregon but baiting for bear and cougar isn't.

Game laws don't seem to make any sense sometimes.
