MOO Cow track Vs Elk Tracks

Postby mandrroofing » 08 04, 2013 •  [Post 1]

This may sounds strange but on my first elk hunt last year there were cattle in our hunting area,i saw a lot of tracks and droppings.Cattle droppings(paddies) is quite different then elk but what about there tracks,do they look the same or is there a big difference?

The smaller cows it's a little tough to tell but ORDINARILLY the "moo cows" won't use game trails. There will be a few very well used trails that the cattle are using frequently. Cattle tracks are wider than elk tracks and the tip of the hoof is more rounded than an elk track.

They realy are quite easy to tell apart.
Overall cow tracks are wider at the top and bottom, the toe area on an elk is much thiner. Even more easy if it is a cow/calf operation the big moo cow tracks will be with the little moo cow. ( compared to yearly steers running around) Calf moo cow that were dropped this year will be 200- 400 lbs the 400 lber or a late moo cow from last year will be the only traclk avout the right size of an elk,
Moo cows have a wider split between each side of the hoof, look at the elk pic . the split between the hoof is the same front to back (except in soft ground)
Moo cow calves and yearlings have a much more round track,.. Ill wont be able to get a pic for a few days, I posted a pic on this thread last year
