What small game head?

Postby JGH » 08 06, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Last year I saw plenty of blue grouse while elk hunting. I never shot one, not wanting to waste an arrow/broadhead.

What small game head are folks using for these birds?

I carry one arrow in my quiver with a Judo head for grouse, works great. The arms grab onto anything and make arrow retrieval easy on a miss. They tear a pretty good hole in the birds as well as cottontails when one appears. I've been using the same arrow for the last 5 seasons, just had to replace the head a couple of times. If you decide to use this, make sure you place it in your quiver where you WON'T grab it by mistake when you are shooting a second shot at big game. It would be terrible to shoot a bull, or buck with this head! :D

I carry two judo/ small game heads. Fresh grouse makes a fine meal. I carry two broad heads as well.

What twinkieman said. Except, in 2010 I had what I call, the "Wire Propeller of Death." It was made by a local guy, and not sure how widespread they are sold. That thing was AWESOME . . . until I shot a rock grouse with it.

Used to shoot Judos until I was using my bag target on day and a guy happened by and shot the bag with a 125 gr. rubber blunt. Tore the heck out of my target with the impact of that bludgeon blunt. He made a believer out of me1 Been shooting blunts ever since.

Judo. Just make sure it goes in your quiver upside down, with the nock in the hood so you don't accidentally grab it when you have an elk coming in - that would suck.
Otherwise, judos will deflate a grouse and the wires make them easy to find if you miss.

Always have a Judo in my quiver. Flys the same as my broadheads so I practice during the day and works great on small game.

having said that, i have yet to find a better SGH than the judo tip. i take one with me. it is my practice head in the woods when i have backpacked in, and need to verify my bow is still shooting correctly. i center punch a stump or something.

I may just switch to that! A family friend of mine made me a small game head a few years ago. I finally missed and lost it :( . I had shot multiple grouse out of trees with that puppy and the arrow always stayed inside the bird but the head would be all the way though. I shoot a 125 gr head so he gave me a 100 gr tip with the very back end of a 12 gauge shell. Just the small metal "butt end" with the primer not inside. Granted it was probably more than 125 grains but man was it an awesome small game head.
