I took my wife and kids on a pre-season elk scouting trip. I wanted to show them what I would be experiencing next month.

It was a perfect day. Cloudy, with some showers and cool at about 50 degrees. We didn't go very far into the mountains, just hiked about a mile or so up and down a steep ridge and across it.

Not only was it a good workout, but we had some fun using calls as well.

It turns out my kids have a pretty good natural bugle built into their lungs. I gave them the tube and they sounded off. They sounded pretty legit, especially as the sound echoed across the canyon.

I was practicing with my diaphragms, both cow and bull calls. Man, I sounded much better in the woods than in my house. I've come a long way from last year when I tried calling for fun on the #ELKTOUR. Night and day actually.

We didn't see or hear any elk but we watch a 5 point Velvet Muley chase a doe like it was the rut. Totally bizarre for August btw.

We're only a couple more weeks from the filming of #ELKTOUR 2. I just can't stand the wait I tell ya. Can't stand it ;)

We used to shoot 3D tourneys with a kid named Dexter who had the nicest sounding cow call using just his voice. He was amazing at 10, but I'm sure his voice probably deepened by now. That was 5 years ago.

Kids do have some good natural high pitched pipes when it comes to calling.

Great time! Can't wait for all 3 of my kids to be old enough to go with me. That will be a great day. Maybe my wife will join us too ;)
