Petzl Headlamp

Postby LarryBud » 08 21, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Looking at a Headlamp.

Is 35 lumens enough power to get you back to camp in th dark?

Thanks,

Petzl?

i have an ancient headlamp. two of them. old. i bet 11 years old. maybe older. Petzls are bomb proof.

Petzl Tikka. no frills. no red bulb, no green or blue. just white, three setting and flash. i told myself i would replace them when needed. the damn things wont die. i hike back in with the thing on the lowest setting. it is pretty dim, but the batteries go forever at that setting.

i have no problems hiking in pitch darkness. amazing how our eyes adjust to available light. i cannot confirm what lumens i am at at the lowest. close to 35 i bet.

At 35, you are right in the range of typical lumens used by today's headlamps. I'm not sure what the Tikka is rated at, but I can vouch for it as the others have. I was working at REI in '99 or 2000 when those things first came out, and had a few friends that got them. It is diffuse light, as most of today's LED lamps are, so you won't get a super-far reaching beam like the old Petzl Zoom and such. But you also won't need to wear a car battery on your head to power it either. Plenty of light for your application! The headlamp you can pass on to your kids and their kids ;)
