All depends on the aggressiveness of the herd, too, are they at their destination spot (feeding/bedding) or are they in transition (on the move) to one? Calling cows to you is much easier when a bulls cows are not showing signs of estrus. Just because a bull has cows does not make him a mark for real aggressive action, at least one cow needs to be in or near estrus to really flip his switch & up your odds! Each encounter can prove to be different, adapt to each one individually & you'll have an 80% chance of having at least some of these elk in bowrange.

I hear that Paul. it's the bulls with cow's in estrus that i'm talking about ;) whether they are on the move or in their bedding area. as you know it can be difficult at best to get that bull to leave his cows for less seasoned hunters using passive techniques and tactics.
