chuckles and grunts

Postby patdel » 08 22, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Is there a trick to making these two calls sound authentic? I have spent tons of time practicing and think I can bugle and cow call pretty good with a mouth reed. When I attempt to chuckle or grunt it just sounds stupid. I think I am doing something wrong. Last year when I heard real bulls do this I could almost feel the sound if that makes any sense. Mine just don't sound very convincing. I'm pretty inexperienced with elk so cut me some slack if this is a dumb question.

Thanks.

You are not alone. I've been on a mission to improve these sounds this year. Some of the calling experts on here helped a few of us rookies on here. Check out the threads where people posted up elk sounds and others commented and critiqued.

Most hunters go low to high on chuckles, elk start high and maintain it. The suck back, getting air for the next chuckle, creates the low sounding note on the back end.
