Gold panning at camp?

Postby Sucobowhunter » 08 24, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I was thinking about bringing a gold pan with me on my bivy hunt and doing a little panning during the down time. I seem to be real deep and find some cool streams that look like they could hold some nuggets.(grin) Anybody thought of or done this?

I was introduced to panning for gold when I was in grade school on a field trip to a museum. I was fascinated by the vile of gold the man showed the class and that he was able to collect it all just taking his pan into the woods. Over the years I have considered it as a hobby many times but it always stays on the back burner. If you end up doing any panning for gold let know how you do. Maybe you'll score big and cover the cost of your hunt.

I have a friend up in Garden Valley Idaho that kills it. Says he gets color in every pan. I want to go try it myself. In elk season though there's no time for that.

My father worked with an old guy that liked searching for treasures with a metal detector. One year he was in Northern Arizona and found something that set of the detector so he threw it in his backpack. He was looking through his stuff when he got home and cleaned off the golf ball sized item. He had a gold nugget after removing the soil. He went back looking around but never found anymore. He never marked the spot and wasn't sure just where he found it along with all the other spots he found stuff.
