Careful about August elk locations versus October elk locations. Where I have hunted around CO, the elk are not always in the same place Aug/Sept as late Oct/Nov. Factors are drought/wet years, hunting pressure (about the same each year), heavy deep early snow and hard killing frost at higher elevation.

For my primary hunting area, there is not a lot of private land that they go hide to. Other areas I have hunted, I see elk move to protective areas like ranches as early as late September. I have seen them abandon a lush/plush area in mid-September during Muzzleloader. Where I hunt now, there is a low amount of private land so that makes the area much easier IMHO.

More seasoned elk hunters may have a better "picture' for you. Everything is area dependent.

I found things are very different between a Southern CO area I hunted and a Central Mountain area I hunt. So many factors that your head will start to spin.
