On average, how far from this camp do you usually encounter elk?

That blows. But, you did get a very, very nice camp setup! I would guess that there will be some very good meals prepared in that back country ranch (hopefully, a few nights of straps and loins with fried tatos and onions)...

Thanks everyone

I didnt do it all today tho.
I have been working on it over the summer when we went up camping. I have over a cord of wood cut and stacked [you can just barely see it on the right]

The flat top log by the fire I made in 2010 and brought it from my old campsite.

The fire ring has seen 2 other camp sites over the past 10 years

Notice my solar panel by the white cook tent?
That runs my 12v lights :)

Coordinates to follow - wink wink :)

Yes. Green astro turf in 2 tents. The tent on the right has a sewn in floor.

3 - 4 hunters. Depends if Patricia decides to attend :)

I have taken a good assessment of that tree.
I cut down 6-8 others that were more precarious than that one.
Once nice thing is that not many have fallen down in that area [yet]

Who knows, I may fell it right on the fire pit one night :)

Our hunt starts 1/2 hour before daylight Saturday morning :)

By the time season rolls around you will have already burned 7 days of your aloted time at that site. Hope the forest service is generous in your area. Isn't 14 days the limit? I've had old rangers let me stay the entire season because they knew I wasn't a squatter. Then again I've ran into a few younger ones that had to do everything by the book. What a pain!!!

You are right Bill.
The FS is kinda layed back in the area.
Plus, its a brand new site and cant see it from the main road.
If all goes well, 2 weeks from tonight we will be done at that spot

That looks like an awesome camp! We setup wall tents for rifle season and it really is a game-changer.

For archery we usually backpack in a few miles with all our gear on our backs. Needless to say the comforts of a good camp cannot be overstated.

Go get 'em cnelk.

Dang it, my camp is too far away.

Every time you people post pics of fish, I get a craving for fish.

Try not to eat too much :D

I usually lose 5-7 lbs during September. I bet no one in your camp loses weight chasing elk.

I wish all in your camp a safe and successful hunt.

We are tent camping Western Slope of Colorado for the first time (have hunted the area previously). No known griz, but lots of black bears. We will be 4 miles from truck, etc. Any suggestions regarding food/kitchen set ups? I've heard of guys setting up the kitchen far from sleeping tents?
(PS, we are huge fans of ElkNut. Totally, DIY Public. My son arrowed a nice 4 x4 his second year at it. Used the agressive techniques and chased him down!)

WhiteEye - that sounds like our archery setup. We usually hang our bag of food ~100 yds from camp, and try to elevate it between a couple tall trees (do some googling on hanging a food bag for bears, you'll see lots). We've never had a problem with bears. Mind you, we're in CO where the grizzlies aren't - if they were around I'd probably take some additional precautions, like putting it farther away or something (?). Honestly, the chipmunks and squirrels are a much bigger problem than bears are...

The recommendation is to form a triangle with one point your tent, another cooking area and 3rd your bear bag (food storage). All separated by 200-250 yards.

I am lazy and only do 75-150 yards depending on terrain. I do not eat in my tent or keep food in it. I backpack solo and have not had an issue. The key is to keep food and toiletries scents out of your tent area.

Some people with high traffic in their camp areas do not experience issues even with food there. I am solo, so I take the extra precautions.

Good point. We don't do much cooking aside from boiling water and adding it to dehydrated food, so we forego the "cooking" area. Our food area has our trash hanging also.

22 years in CO woods and never encountered a bear. This year, I bought bear spray (puts the family at ease). I bet the makers of the bear spray put bear attractant in the spray just to get people to buy more. If I see a bear this year, I will prove my theory

I bought a bear tag this year because we see bear every year. They come into our calling

Its different of having a bear tag [while elk hunting] and actually hunting bear, which I fully intend to do

I also carry bear spray... a 40cal S&W :)

See 3-4 blackbears a Day when i elk hunt. But there are a lot of farmers fields with grains. which the bears like as much as the elk.

My theory for a lack of encounters is 1) I stink so bad they can even smell me upwind 2) when I lived in the mountains, my dog was always with me and likely scared them away before I saw them. I only started hunting 4 years ago solo. The bear spray is more for going back to retrieve meat in case I don't hang it far enough from the downed elk.
