Last minute advice?

Postby GWH » 08 27, 2013 •  [Post 1]

First I want to say thanks to everyone on the forum! Over the last couple of months I have learned a ton from just reading on here. I will be heading up this weekend for my 1st archery elk hunt. Any last minute advice for a beginner?

Positive attitude! Know every day that you are going to kill an elk TODAY and then make it happen. Luck is not a factor, but it doesn't hurt, so good luck!

Push yourself just you and if you can't it's just you don't worry about anyone else. This is your time.

Hunt hard but hunt smart. Find them, work the wind (always) and get close... real close and let the situation develop. Draw back when you think a shot may be materializing before you can see the vitals. Let off when the shot is not there and prepare to draw again.

Hard to add to the already great list, but I'd say "Expect the unexpected" (sounds cliche, I know). But if you're pretty positive an elk should show up from your 12 o'clock, keep an eye and ear out for the surprise attack from all other angles.

Don't beat yourself up if you miss an opportunity. I missed my first Bow elk at about 50 yards because i was new, and inexperienced. Beat myself up for the whole next year. replaying the moment over and over again for the next 9-12 months.

Be close to where they are in the dark morning hours & stay till you can't see to shoot. Cracks me up every year to see guys heading out or coming back to camp during prime time. If I could only hunt 3 hours a day, they would be first light/ last light. Of the 20 some elk I've killed, only a few we're taken past 9 In the am or before 5 in the pm. Consistently be there during prime time!

Warmup and stretch before you hike up the mountain. Injuries suck, and some are avoidable.

Trim your toe nails

Keep your laces tight

Eat and drink twice as much as you normally do

And most important, smell the roses

Enjoy your hunt

I know your gone already, but go where you think elk would be. Go where you know its going to suck climbing up that ridge or down into that canyon. The elk are likely there. The reality is 95% of people are going to get lucky, and 5% are going to work for it. Put yourself in a position to have an encounter, and eventually it will correlate to an elk in the freezer!

Never quit. Push yourself and be willing to go the "extra mile". Never become discouraged, and be positive at all times. I AM GOING TO KILL AN ELK!

Good luck and have a great hunt.
