Pleading cow call

Postby elkh00nter » 09 04, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Hi all,

I've heard reference to a pleading cow call by many hunters. In the elknut dvds, however, Paul never seems to explicitly refer to any particular sound as such. When others talk about it, some make it sounds like it's a super-soft cow mew, but others refer to it like it's a whine that can be cranked up in volume. Can anybody shed some light on it? Is it really just a pre-estrus whine or excited cow call?

Thanks!

Terry, good question & welcome to the Forum!

When thinking of a pleading sound think of your kids or dog really wanting something. Kids will beg or plead for a particular food or drink, dogs can plead for attention such as wanting to be petted or jump up on your lap as you are relaxing in an easy chair. Too, they may be wanting to be fed. In either case they are looking for attention!

Elk do the same thing. There are times they want other elk to take notice or come over their way, when this is the case they will stray from their standard "social mews & chirps" -- they will now sorta whine or plead for others attention. This pleading can come in varying degrees or levels depending on their demands or urgency in tone. Instead of the classic 1/4 to 1/2 second social mew it can be extended to 1 to 1-1/2 second type mew or whine at the end of the mew. In situations where they are more demanding for assistance or direction they will add the Buzz, just a light version of this Estrus Buzz can ask for others to show themselves or come their way. Volume in any of these forms can be tailored for the situation at hand. Soft ones for when elk are inside 100yds & mid to a high volume when elk are beyond that distance. At any rate a plead is an extension of the classic mew with a buzz from your throat thrown in here & there as the occasion calls for it. -- So think of your pet pleading for attention & you'll be on the right track! (grin)

Great answer Paul. That's about as good as it gets. I totally agree.
