Mostly sunny; Windy.

Postby JGH » 09 12, 2013 •  [Post 1]

That's the forecast for the middle part of next week.

After hoping the rain would let up, now ... WIND.

Tips for hunting in windy conditions?

Couldn't help myself. I will be keeping an eye on this thread as I will be heading back out middle of next week.

Oh man. That sucks too. Wind or rain, rain or wind... I suppose I prefer wind if you know some hotspots where elk can be located somewhat reliably. Since bugles will not carry far (especially upwind), you may need to be closer to hear them talking. The good part about windy days in CO is that it *usually* is pretty calm first thing in the morning. Another benefit is the chances of your scent swirling around unpredictably goes down.

I've had pretty good luck and not needed to experience it too often. Try lee slopes (if they're elky), stay in the timber if it's really ripping. My theory is that elk don't like the open when they can't hear their surroundings very well. All told, elk still have to eat and drink and breed.

On second thought, just shoot one right as the rain is quitting. Then as the wind picks up, find the blood trail, quarter and pack-out - you'll be dry in no time.
