Late Season Cow Tags????

Postby NebrCatMan » 10 01, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I know I could look this up on the Colorado D.O.W. webbsite, and probably will but I have a couple of minutes here at work so I'll just ask here. Is there any late season cow tags avaialbe in the state of Colo. or does the DOW have any areas they want the elk cows thinned out late in the year. This is of course rifle hunting. Being from out of state I do not know much about late season hunts but I bet snow (and lots of it) can be a huge problem. Do Ranchers ever want cows thinned out on their ranch. Most probably charge access fees? Any one want to chip in any comments? Thanks!

You can surely find some 4th rifle cow tags leftover - check the CPW website and search for 'leftover licenses'. And I'm sure some of these will be in GMUs with public ground, state wildlife areas, etc. Tags for special late seasons (later than 4th rifle) are probably not available, though I'm not sure...

Ranchers definitely want cows thinned out, the trouble is knowing who to ask and how to approach it. Knocking on doors is best (be personal), but may not be an option.

CO CPW (former DOW) reduced cow tag #s in most GMUs, as elk herds are at CPW's desired long term size. Result: Many cow tags took more points to draw, fewer were left over after drawing in 2013.
