Sounds fun, you boys have a good time! Thanks for the invite, wish I could make it. But then again, you would have had to title this thread something different. The only thing I killed this year was TIME! :)

Yikes, that's a bunch of Elknuts/elk killers converging! I would like to offer a few things that shouldn't be done when this gathering occurs ;)

1. Probably shouldn't put an elk rack on the handlebars of cnelk's Harley and practice "moving" shots..... even with blunts.

2. Probably shouldn't see who can call something in with "elk sounds" in the tavern.

3. Probably shouldn't play the "hey, let's stand in a circle, shoot an arrow straight up in the air, and see who runs first game".

4. Probably shouldn't challenge each other to a "who can bone out a large animal the quickest contest" when the neighbor's Hereford is the only large animal in sight.

5. Lastly, probably shouldn't do Prince Albert in a can prank calls to John F at 0100 in the morning (although that one would be fun). I believe I have his phone number somewhere if you need it

Have fun gentlemen, you deserve it! Congrats again on all your harvests this year. RJ

One day we 'll get a chance at a great bull like that Scott. Until then, I'll be soaking up the entire experience of each hunt, regardless of the size of the animals.

Plus, those young ones sure do taste good :)

One of the topics of discussion last night was that each of us killed a bull using a different tactic.

Lou sat over a water hole

Scott cold called his bull in

Rudy spotted and stalked his bull

Brad slipped in on bugles and cow called

So.
This shows there are many ways to kill an elk

Even though you all used different techniques to get your elk, I am sure there were common elements in what you were doing. Can you identify some of those common points, that others can use? Maybe they are things like you all drive Chevys, or chew Juicy Fruit gum. Well, maybe those are not the key elements, but what are they?

Swede
From the information gathered, the common denominators were:

The wind was in favor of the shooters
All 4 elk were 50 yds or less from the shooters
Terrain [tight cover] helped in being close to the elk

Other Info:
Moon phase had no impact
It wasnt raining when we shot the animals
3 of the 4 were shot in the afternoon/evening

If I killed an elk I would fly from CA to tell the story over a few beers and listen to the knowledge that comes from this group!

Cnelk, (Brad) you are spot on in needing versatility to consistently be in elk & take elk. If ones just look at the "meatpole" thread they will notice in the stories that there's a wide variety of tactics used. One dimensional hunters can really handcuff themselves, they need many tools in their bag of tricks for the various encounters they will come across. Paul II & I are no different, if you look at our last 20 elk you will find that maybe 2-3 were taking with the same tactic, the rest were with all something different as each bull required a bit of a twist depending on the encounter, we must be willing to adjust & adapt to each situation. These elk were all taken in a running & gunning style. Hunting water or treestands can be a bit different.

Guys, I've been out of the loop for the last week but that was a GREAT time! The only bummer was that there weren't many people left when they cajoled me into voice bugling. Elsewhere when that happens I can usually turn the whole restaurant or bar, LOL!

I really enjoyed meeting Rudy and Scott. Great guys all, and cool stories shared. Hearing the elation of in the retelling of their first-ever elk with a bow brought it all back to me after all these years. Thanks for that, and let's do it again with a couple more Elkknutters joining next time. Wearin' your hat right now, Rudy!

To Elknut's point about varying tactics: I've only ever killed one other bull sitting at a waterhle, and that was nearly 30 years ago. It isn't my cup of tea, but when conditions dictate, we adapt. I was 85--90 degrees, big bulls were in that silent "roaming the land" pre-rut mode, and the remaining groups we'd scouted were decent bulls, but not what we were after. After I found a secluded waterhole in a canyon and figured out a plan to ambush lone big bulls, we put it to work and killed two whoppers out of the same natural ground blind on consecutive nights of hunting. They were the only elk we saw there, and we didn't see a single cow the whole trip. Would much rather have run-gunned-called like we normally do, but when that wasn't working, we changed up. It paid off.

4 Elk Killers Meet Up

Postby Huntography » 10 20, 2013 •  [Post 32]

Hi Lou!

Good times indeed. Happy you're wearing the Huntography #elktour hat. Would love to see a pic.

Happy we could rekindle your memories and feelings from your first elk through our stories.

After filming lots of elk hunters and hunting myself, so many factors help dictate under what conditions we shoot our elk. But one thing is for sure, every way I've experienced has been one heck of a thrill.

Cheers to everyone's 2013 elk season and to 2014.

Rudy
