Postby JoeMc » 03 23, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Just registered for the forum . I have been a deer hunter for the last 35 years. 3 years ago me and some buddies started chasing Elk. What an adventure! It is totally different than white tail hunting and very challenging. Being experienced hunters we are determined to "do it on our own" but it has proven to be a tough road. I am hoping to get more tips and tricks from you experienced elk hunters on the forum to hopefully improve my odds!!

Welcome to 'the' elk forum buddy. Pull up a log by the fire, a beverage of choice, and chime in whenever you want. RJ

Welcome, you found a great place to learn and share about our passion for all thing wapiti. If you haven't already done so, check out the CO Parks & Wildlife website for the Southwest region big game brochure, the big game atlas, the statistics section, and contact info for the hunt planners. You will find out more there in an hour than in weeks of corresponding on the forum.

RE GMU 65: A big chunk of wilderness to the east, the Big Blue, is spectacular elk habitat. On the west side is a small part of Mt. Sneffels wilderness. Great also. R U going for archery?

thanks Guys

We are going in the second rifle season. probably around Mt. Snefels.
We hunted the White River Nat'l Forest the last two years and thought we would move closer to home. I have heard good things about this area

Hey ya'll Hi all,

Thanks for the add. As my ID suggests, I'm trying to work smarter not harder haha :geek: . Hoping I didn't join the party after it's done and over, seeing the last post years ago. With that in mind I'm looking at hunting OTC Unit 65, 2nd or 3rd season rifle down by Ouray after not drawing for Unit 481 or Unit 49. Is it worth a 5 hour drive or is the unit saturated in bright orange and pink? I don't need a trophy bull and I'm definitely down with hiking. I have looked at a few of the trails in the area just not up for dodging other folks or getting caught in a crossfire. Any info, advice, gripes, opinions are greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Worksmarter. You are definitely not too late. The parties start right after hunting season and last for the entire year. You can share your experiences both good and not so good at any time. We are either looking forward to our next hunt or reminiscing over past ones. Good luck on getting some info on your planned hunting unit.
