What did you do today to prepare for the 2017 elk season?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 19, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Our actual fall elk hunt is the culmination of a long planning, conditioning, practicing, gear acquisition/testing, and preparation period. Most successful elk hunters I've ever known have a skill set that they hone constantly throughout the year in anticipation of their brief time actually hunting. So, what did you/are you gonna do today to prepare for the 2017 elk season? This may be a very long thread by the time Elktember rolls around 8-)

Checked in on WT :D Considered my next draw apps, but then I think about that every day, even while hunting. Will walk dogs shortly to get a lil exercise.

Started back doing burpees and then put some weight in my pack, put on my hunting boots and walked about 2 miles around the conservation area down the road from my house. Going to start earlier this year and work my way up.

Walked 6.49 miles today, 2 of which on the treadmill on incline. I'm 6 weeks into my prep there. I built new arrows last week and paper tuned my bow last weekend. :D

Plowed snow all day with a loader, a bobcat, and my four wheeler.... wishing it was fall and not winter....oh, I also looked at around 100 plus elk laying in the hay field in about two feet of snow

Quit smoking on 12.26.17 slipped one time on 01.14.17. Was trying for last season to quit and it did not work out well. This year is different - I will succeed!

I started my diet (which is essentially cutting out carbs and switching from beer to whiskey), dialing in my new bow this week and trying to break in new boots. Going to try and figure out how to print out maps from an older thread I discovered last week too!

So no gym today, but i gotta check the trapline anyway so i might as well walk it. Some fresh air will probably do me good anyway.....

Been hitting the gym 5-6x a week. Mostly strengthening of the core, legs and upper body. Cardio is starting soon along with carrying that weighted pack.

Shot the bow, went to the gym, and watched Elknuts Worse Than Wolves. Unfortunately I fell asleep for a few minutes during the DVD. Lots of information to digest in the dvd.

I also played with the Mellow Yellow reed  .

I edited my Arrow thread that has everyones panties in a wad...does that count? grin

I'm starting a new workout regimen thats a little different. Essentially i will still hike the hills with a 25#-40# pack...and still cycle on the road and spin as I need that low impact.

I'm going to incorporate more short bursts to get my heart rate way up...both in the gym with light weights, on machines...and in the field. I'm going to get one of those wrist monitors...that chest strap HM is a pain. I did one of those Orange Theory classes with my wife [probably do a couple months of that over the summer] and I can see the benefit of variation...and the high heart rate workouts.

I guess I will have to go and look at Beendare's edit of his arrow thread, so I can get my "panties" out of my crack. :o

I started my workout on this forum jumping to conclusions and trying to straighten Roosiebull out. The latter is the most difficult. He is as big a project as Beendare. :D

As soon as I check out Beendare's edit and share some appropriate corrective thoughts, I will start up on my treadmill. Now, running on a treadmill has a lot in common with trying to "help" Roosiebull and Beendare. I don't think I need to explain. ;)

Too dang drizzy to hike outside today, so, I'll see if I can figure out why the RZR started missing last weekend when I fired it up. Maybe water in the fuel, maybe clogged air filter from dust, fouled plug who knows. Can't have engine troubles with the elk hunter transport wagon in the high country this fall . Been doing some decent hiking/CV work and lifting some free weights MON-FRI. Will start shooting bow again as soon as I get it back from Darton (off it went to get higher poundage limbs put on), and, get new heavier arrows fletched up.

Watched 5 Calls For Success this morning, practiced a few calls on the mouth reed. Spent an hour on MT FWP website reading rules and regs.

May go to the gym today and may go out in the cold and shoot a few arrows.

Just finished up some development loads for the 25-06. Not elk related.

I just finished off my treadmill routine. Now I will go over to the gear forum and stir up Beendare again on his arrows thread. That should complete my exercise for this morning, unless Beendare stirs me up again. Otherwise I will prepare for an afternoon siesta. :D

I got home after a week away. I had fallen off my standard for being as scent free as possible, so when I got things put away, I took a bath. My spouse said I was beyond the point of recovery for just a shower, so I had to soak and then wash off again. What a man has to endure to maintain peace and tranquility in his home. :(

Turkey hunted.. man it was awesome.. had them gobbling, in bow range at 15 yards... I think my heart rate was at least 150...the emotional ride was great, the situational calling was great..drew back and shot right over the top using the Magnus bullheads
...I got so excited that when i drew back I saw all 3 pins...instead of focusing on one... will continue hammering... and continue to develop my confidence when fall comes around.

Great practice for Elk hunting

I went on a run for the first time two days ago. the legs are a little tight but not sore. 2.5 miles, but I cheated and walked a little here and there. Felt pretty good. although I run so slow an old lady in a walker sped past me. Well maybe not, but it felt that way.

Been following these threads for awhile and getting lots of valuable information. Second-time elk archery hunter, though I grew up tagging along with my dad. Got the bug pretty bad after having lots of close encounters and three devastating misses last season. (Shot straight over the back at 25, 16, and 20 yards.) Been practicing diaphragm calls and more realistic scenarios with the bow.

I also do some long-distance trail running. I can't contribute much on the hunting side; still learning! But can do some talking about mountain running and general mountain fitness. Not something I talk about much, but figure I should give back how I can!

So, today I did 15 miles at low heartrate but relatively quick pace for me. Nice to be out there in the early morning spring weather!

Idahoian,
I could use some tips! Are you one to recommend the interval training? I haven't done that in the past but am thinking about doing that this year.

By the way, when you were on your 15 mile run, did any old ladies using walkers speed past you?

Happy to help how I can!

First things first, no shame in walking from time to time. Being out there is the important thing. If you need to walk in order to keep it enjoyable (or tolerable), then by all means do it. Staying consistent is the key. The body will slowly adapt to repeated and consistent stresses.

Regarding interval training, it depends on your goals. If you want to get faster *after* you've established a pretty good base--say, 2 months with consistent weekly mileage--then I would recommend it. An example would be a one-mile warmup, 1/2 mile at a pace where you can say a few words but not a complete sentence, three minutes rest, then another 1/2 mile, then one-mile cool down. Then scale up from there every few weeks.

Just as an example: I started doing intervals last year. (Before that I just did all my runs at a slow pace.) Now I do a two-mile warmup, 1 mile "on" (usually 5:50ish pace), 2 minutes rest, repeat for 4 mile repeats, then two miles back home. I think it keeps you from plateauing and getting stuck in an "ultra shuffle." Also helps with leg strength and "embrace the suck" necessary for elk hunting!

All that said, it's better to be shuffling consistently than getting injured. Consistent mileage trumps everything, workouts such as intervals are just icing on the cake. (Or lipstick on the pig.)

Regarding old ladies: I will say, many an older lady can outrun me, but I didn't encounter any today!

After a year and a half lay off ....for various reasons...I finally got back to regular walk/run plan Started extremely slow and not very long but did 3 min run/1 min walk for a mile. Also 2 min walk / 1 min run for 30 min. Alternated that for 5 workouts this week. A long way to go to get back to being able to do half-marathons but it's a start

Gonna head up north later today to a Jason Phelps (Phelps Game Calls) Elk hunting seminar. I always enjoy hearing a top notch elk hunter/caller talk about their methods and concepts. Perhaps add something new to my tool kit ;).

Been to the gym regularly. Studying maps, and researching gear.
Need to get my weighted pack on and go for a walk tomorrow.

Been biking every day and getting out 3-4 times a week hiking (looking for whitetail sheds while doing it) with my dog.

I live at about 1000 feet above sea level and it's flatter than a pancake in the Red River Valley, so I also have a couple spots on the levee that I workout on to get my legs and lungs in OK shape.

It's still a slap in the face when at 8800 feet compared to the elevation here.

It's awesome to have a trip every fall to look forward to for motivation. I end up swinging about 25 pounds every year over the winter and then get back in shape in preparation for my trip out west. If i didn't have that for motivation I would be even more of a toad.

4 days at the gym last week. I need to hit the cardio a little harder.
Yesterday hiked 2.5 miles after work with 35lbs in my pack.
Today moved 3 treestands in one area I hunt here in PA for deer. Busted ass carriying a 5l15foot ladderstand up hill. Then carried a hangon and 20foot stick up to the ridge top. Kept the 35lb pack on between sets while carrying the stands. The 3rd stand was easy just swung it around the tree, the wife wasn't happy with her view.

Once done, we hiked around a point and back up over the ridge. Best guess was another 2 miles. Didn't track it with the GPS.

Hunted spring bear in a spot that looked good for elk. No bear after nine miles but three groups of cows.

Day well spent in my book

Gym four days a week, two days with 80lbs in pack for 3 miles, on Thursdays the wife and I run 6 miles of trail in conjunction with the gym.
Will start shooting my bow next month, I don't archery hunt elk, only whitetail but I find the discipline makes me a better shot with the rifle.
I will also start putting 20 rounds downrange every two weeks starting in May. I have a 22-250 set up exactly like 7mm STW so I don't burn the barrel out.
I enjoy the prep almost as much as the hunt...

Oh yea I still have time for beer.

Ruckin for 5 miles up and down the mtn. That makes 31 miles for the month so far. Also could say I'm scouting for gobblers, deer, bear, grouse, predators to trap, sheds, etc. With 30 extra pounds on my back.

I don't do anything especially focused on elk until August.

That being said, work, fishing, and hunting keep me in shape...I have been doing lots of calling for lions, covering lots of ground, and making mental notes of anything that could be important later.

I shoot my bow about 3 or 4 days a week. My biggest thing is just staying in the woods all year..walking out new areas, looking for last year's rubs, and stay in Mountain shape.

I have been fishing half of my days off, and hunting the other half...staying in the environment makes opening day feel very comfortable.

glad you are feeling better Tigger!

new sight for my bow yesterday, mounted and sighted in, then went on a long hike in the hills.

today, called for lions first thing, then covered a bunch more country looking for cat sign or sheds...found a big chalky buck shed, and about a month old lion kill....back home to get a snack, then back at it!

Have quit smoking and all nicotine since 03.03.17 feeling good physically and mentally as a result and so far this is the best I've done quitting. I think I got it licked this time!
- I am grateful for all the encouragement from friends, family and also from last years thread on 2016 prep.

I also got a fitbit (swore I never would) a couple weeks ago. Last year I lost #50 in preparation for elk hunting through logging all food and drink. This year I am hopeful that in combination with this year's fitbit I will loose another #50.

I rode mountain bike after work tonight. Did 10 miles on trails and gravel. Got the heart beating pretty good.

Shot my bow when I got home from biking.

Field Archery Leauge practice session. 10-65 yards uneven ground, sometimes standing on rocks, tree roots.
Shot the new bow well, just need to dial the pins in a little better.

I joined with Team Hoyt, but not the Hoyt we all know. This one takes disabled kids on races and triathlons. It was a Dick Hoyt video that planted a seed to one day do Ironman for me. Pretty cool to now be able to take kids out and let them experience racing all while getting one heck of a good workout.

Today.
Had the new granddaughter over for the day. She's 3 months old so we went on an hour long stroller walk. Not a lot of sweat, but it was nice to actually have some weather where the temps were over 60 so we could enjoy the day.
Shot my bow quite a bit this morning before she arrived.
Not very hard core at all!

Chased turkeys with my boys until noon. Aidan got his first spring bird, nice Jake. Came right in off the roost. Gage and I got on 3 more that hung up on us. We left them alone for a little while and tried them right before the end of shooting hours. Sure enough they fired up and came in, Gage missed at 30 yards Great morning.

Shot the bow for a bit and hit the gym this evening.

Went for a run this morning and sure enough, half way through I hear clickety clack and the old lady in her walker caught me from behind again. I commented to her that she didn't pass me as fast as last time and she replied that her emphysema was acting up! I am gonna hold that 96 year old off one of these days!

2 mile run and shot the first 18 arrows out of my new bow. Super windy but it seemed to shoot well!

I've dropped 31 pounds so far. Only 6 more pounds to go for my goal weight. Will start shooting bow and muzzleloader soon when the weather in MN decides to cooperate. Will be walking with a weighted vest soon. Had knee surgery in December so don't want to overdo it right away but I'll get there.

Weight and cardio. So last year, I had Achilles issues and could not work on cardio. I did, however, do a good job on hiking with my pack. Man, the mountains about killed me on the first trek up!

The winter was not so kind to my waist. I plan to burn some of that off, but it got me to thinking. Would you rather be, say, 10 pounds heavier but good cardio or 10 pounds lighter and not as good cardio?

Bought a new tent. Took a lunch break to head over to the warehouse and pick up my new Kodiak 10X10 VX. Will test it out with the boys on Friday night. Definitely looking forward to leaving the nylon tent behind when August rolls around.

Rode mountain bike 10 miles this morning and 10 miles this evening after work.
Shot my bow this morning before work and after the bike ride.
Read part of Swede's book this evening again.....finding a few nuggets in that thing!

Geezus, you must only work 5 hours a day ;). Bike riding is great CV and leg conditioning for the elk woods. Good reminder, gonna throw my bike in the truck tomorrow morning.

I shot my bow again. I am getting better and the bow is starting to feel more like it wants to come to full draw instead of resisting so much. I did not get on my treadmill as I have been working at some tree removal. My yard had three large plum trees Monday morning. Now it has none. The tree removal work is plenty hard, but different. Tomorrow it is back to the treadmill. I never enjoy that, but it does make me sweat profusely.

couple days ago, mounted my new rest, started tuning...shot a bunch.

been shooting every day i'm home, finished broadhead tuning today...need to order up some logs here pretty quick so I can get my pins all dialed in.

yesterday was the first day in quite awhile that I thought I should wear a belt...hit the woods looking for lion sign, my plan A was full of bear sign so I didn't call....plan B was full of elk, and I didn't want to spook them, so I just enjoyed a walk in the hills.

on my way back to my rig last night, I decided to take a short cut back...instead of walking the sloping downhill road back out, I had to cross 3 big nasty drainages with no game trails through a one year old cut..i was reminded short cuts are a bad idea, because if they were actually shorter, it would just be the way  i'm pretty certain I didn't learn my lesson either.

Got half a dozen heavier arrows to test out.

Have a few easton 6mm fmj with a 100gr tip 460gr total weight
Have the same with 125gr tips for 485 both have blazer vanes.

Just got some 5mm with 50gr brass inserts in with 100gr tips and 4" vanetech vanes on them. 556gr total weight.

All are flying well, the 5mm sure do shoot quiet and hit hard.

I could lighten the load a little but tht would just put me closer to the 6mm with 125gr tips. I will do some more testing before I decide what to shoot for hunting this fall. I only want 1 setup for deer/elk.

Grilling a couple burgers and heading to the gym.

Like every day, went to the Crossfit gym. I'll shoot my bow when I get home from work.

Thinking I'll go for a weighted night hike after the boys go to bed tonight in the Hills.

Well, yesterday I took a step back big time for this season.. I quit a job (gave my notice) that I love to change professions to a job that will hopefully give me more time with my family. My old job was great for having afternoons off but it was 7 days a week. In the last 13 months I have taken 5 days off. With changing careers I might be moving back towards where I grew up (I might run into Lefty in hunting season now) so that will mean changing hunting locations again and maybe not a whole lot of time off this year for hunting, mainly Saturdays. But in the future I will end up with way more time spent with family and hunting... that is the plan anyway. Wish me luck!

Elkhunttoo, I wish you nothing but the best of luck brother! Really sounds like you have something in the wind that will work out well for you and your family. Watch out for that Lefty character though, he's part elk, part deer, part trapper, and part goose.... you never know which one will show up :D

Today I shot my bow and did my treadmill thing. I too am looking forward to hunting season.

Hiked after work with a meager 30 LBs in my old school Army Alice Pack, feeling pretty good as far as physical conditioning at this point in the year. Shot a good handful of arrows tonight and was not at all happy with how I'm shooting this week. I should be ripping them in there out to 40 much better but not doing that for some reason. Will hit it again tomorrow night and see if I can focus in a bit more and confirm my pins on my new bow. Probably just form issues.

It is old age RJ. You start to get shaky and can't see the target through your bifocals. Forty yards is a long way you know. Do you need to take a break on your hike between your shooting point and the place you find your arrows? :D

A week and a half ago I was running and tweaked my Achilles. Not good. Swelled up and I am on the shelf for another week yet. The chiro said don't even go for a walk for 3 weeks. It all stems from my hips being out of alignment. I am glad I read this thread though as I think I can bike. So I will dig out the bike and get on that thing! I just hope that old 90 year old lady from the nursing home with the walker doesn't pass me when I am on my bike......

Rode the SW Missouri hills on a day with temps in the low 90's and high humidity. Also did some lunges and shoulder press. Will start shooting seriously when I get my progressive lenses/glasses late next week. Hoping that's not too big of a learning curve.

while we were unloading day before yesterday, I jumped on the dock scale out of curiosity. i'm 6ft even, last time I weighed myself was December, and I was 184, heaviest I have ever been.

now i'm down to 176, i'm happy about that, would like to drop another 10lbs, extra weight is just not good in any way. I have slightly changed my diet at work, always eat good at home, but at work, I have to eat out every night, and i'm being a little smarter.

I think after this fall, I will start hitting the gym, I stay very active, but it's easier to shed weight, by targeting the places that carry the extra weight.

I am experiencing a sign of age, until I was about 28, I never had to pay attention to diet, I have always been around 155 since high school, no fat....now my same habits are letting some weight stick around, I don't really care for it, but happy to see a small change in diet make a difference.

Got my progressive lens glasses Monday - so last night I stepped out into the front yard for some target practice - shot groups at 20,30,40,50 and 60 yards. Then decided to send some down range at 100 yards. It was a blast. When I moved back up to 50 yards it was almost like shooting fish in a barrel. Did more shoulder presses, squats and lunges. Time is getting short, have a lot to get done between now and mid Sept.

Up and down ladders again like my life depended on it. Carried 26 foot long trusses across a deck to set them, which is usually a 2 man job, by myself. Also walked on the sides of my feet a lot on either side of the band board to get them out to where they were set.

Think about that. I can remember one time I had a client who really gave his all working out, hiking, and running up and down bleachers all spring and summer to prepare for his hunt. After just a couple days he said to me "Man I thought I put on enough miles to be ready for these hills but I did it all on the bottoms of my feet ... not the sides!!!" Side hilling is a big big part of getting around in elk country.

Shot the Total Archery Challenge 3D shoot in the Black Hills of South Dakota over the weekend at Terry Peak SD. Great event. Lots of realistic archery shots as well as some fun shots too. All this activity at 6800 feet or so. Great chance to shoot your bow at some nice 3D targets and do some hiking through some pretty decent terrain. Highly recommend this to all of our fellow archery hunters.

I did some more cardio and shot my bow at longer distance - 70 yard group from last night.

Figure this will make my 40-50 yard shot more accurate come September.

" Carried 26 foot long trusses....."

Doesn't seem to me that carrying a foot long truss would be a 2 man job. When you have to do it 26 times...nah, still doesn't sound like much of a workout. Maybe I am further along in my conditioning than I thought!

I walked 22 miles last week which is fantastic considering my Achilles is just now coming around. Started out strong this week with 11 miles under my belt with a 30 pound pack on, but then I must have ate something bad cuz I ain't feeling none too good. Walking ground to a halt. The neighbors are again laughing at the "homeless man" walking around our neighborhood. I haven't seen him though.

I did my regular workout and shot my bow again. Shooting was more of a challenge as the winds were gusting fairly strong. My accuracy was off some. It is interesting that the wind was from my right side and I kept hitting a couple of inches to the right. Go figure.

I believe I was pushing too much against the wind with my bow arm, or I may have over compensated for wind drift. I just need more practice. RJ, does the wind blow where we will be hunting?

I will answer for him. Yep!!! In Idaho you are for sure going to get wind from the north, then two minutes later from the south, then from the east... but never from the west, unless it comes from the west and then you will get some from the west. ;)

OK, I guess I will keep on practicing. Idaho sounds like it gets a lot of its fresh air from Oregon. We get ours from the ocean and it goes over us and lands in Idaho--I guess, or something like that.

Got some unbelievable time meeting and listening to Dick Hoyt. He has done 6 full Ironmans, 72 marathons, biked across the US all pulling his adult son with cerebral palsy. They have covered over 72,000 miles together. I also just started one of his Books "Its only a Mountain". His final marathon was a couple years ago while he was in his mid 70s. Team Hoyt's motto is "Yes you can!". He is living proof that anything is possible.

I drove 500 miles round trip to a buddy I could trust to find out my draw weight was low. I maxed out my bow at got to 68.8 lbs which got me to 291 ft per second 73 KE with an arrow weight of 389.

Well worth the drive. Picked up 16 ft per second

Went on a 3 mile walk with about 35# in my pack. I'm in better shape than I was at this time last year, but last year I hit it hard the last month, so I've got to keep pushing and improving. My goal this year was very basic - be in better shape than I was last year. If I go elk hunting every year and have that as my goal, here in a few years I will be in great elk hunting shape. Weighed in at 179# last night, walking with a weighted pack in the Missouri humidity takes some weight off you.

I'm no workout warrior and have no desire to ever be that - that's for sure.

My lady and I shot the 3D course and I used my loaded daypack and binoc case. Tried out my pack mounted quiver and made sure I liked it as much as I thought I would. Started reflectching the pile of arrows that were in tatters.

Frowning at maps and fire levels.

I have been over in the desert at my sister in law's since Friday afternoon, been getting some great practice stalking sage rats and jacks almost non stop.

No range finder, trying to get the most out of it, only a couple close shots, most 40 to 60 yds and doing pretty dang good.

Leaving in the morning, but have one judo point left( broke one, and lost 2 in the sage after a ton of shooting)

Best practice I have ever got pre season ;)

Been eating lean, and back down to my mid twenties weight....im ready.

Figured out a big problem with my archery that was causing fletching contact on occasion. Now to fix a bad habit.

Made a camping list. Double whew!

Typical 2.5 mile hike with 30# pack and 40 situps/20 pushups. I gotta get over to the high school to run some bleachers. I am scared to death of the mosquitos on my hill.

still shooting every day I am home, but this time of the year I shoot less arrows, like a dozen a day, break that into 2 sessions, focus on each arrow and it's importance.

everything is tuned, I have a bunch of shots this year, my form is good, now I like to shoot a few less arrows daily until and during season. i'm not a pro, or aspiring to be one, so this is good enough for me to hunt (first 3 shots at 30 yds, one broadhead, followed by 2 field points)

Damn fine shooting Mike! The nice mail lady dropped off a dozen new arrows for me yesterday so I've converted Mrs. Wapiti's kitchen into an arrow fletching station today ;). She doesn't mind at all (especially since she's gone on a road trip with her girlfriend to WY and on to MT to her friends cabin to enjoy the skeetos up the Yaak River). Its just so much nicer inside the house than in my hot old shop, and, I can listen to quality tunes and hang with the pups. 1/2 way through the dozen Black Eagle Rampages and if I do say so myself, they're looking quite nice (four fletch, a bit right helical)! Went with all white Beman vanes and the super sexy red silk aluminum inserts for this batch. I may do a handful of alternate red/white vanes for the rest of the mission. Will get out later and shoot a handful of arrows below the house... Back to hiking tomorrow afternoon after work, didn't get much CV exercise this weekend (with the boss gone, there are way too many chores to do around the place).

haha

you do know why I don't take pics of every group I shoot ;) last weekend I got the best practice I have ever got, probably shot 400 arrows at different yardages unknown. I hope my shooting is on point when I get a bull in front of me, that is the only shot that matters all year.

I did improve a bit this year, one little detail helped a bunch with consistency. I learned to shoot on my own, so i'm sure I have been fighting form issues as long as I have been shooting. this year I have consciously been bringing my elbow up, a trick I learned watching a video on traditional bow shooting, I incorporated it into my compound, and it has helped quite a bit, probably very common knowledge, but I didn't know it until this year. it felt odd at first, like when I started shooting with both eyes open, but now feels natural. it aligns your draw arm with your bow arm, it is a flaw I have had in my form for 20 years. I always enjoy learning something new.

Roosie, I thought I was getting a great compliment at the bow shop this last Spring. The store owner said I was in the top 5% of shooters....of people my age. Dang I wish he could have left off that part about age. He went on to say that there is a reason they have age groups. That was like rubbing salt into the wound. In reality, I am shooting the best bow I have ever drawn, but I am not as steady as I used to be. I can see that my bow hunting days are limited. I don't know how short or long I can hold out. In the mean time I am still practicing about 3 times per week. I shoot 20-24 arrows per session.

To stay within the perimeters of what this thread is about, today I taught Sunday School (Micah), attended worship service and an evening worship. I know who is watching over me and can accept His decision about where all future hunts are headed.

Mr Swede :D

you know very well that shooting the middle out of a target only gets you so far, if you can keep your composure in the woods (something I struggle with, and always have) you don't need to be that good of a shot to kill every elk you aim at, their kill zone is huge if you wait for a broadside elk. I think you have plenty years left, that truly is where the experience shines.

before hanging it up, reducing your yardage on shots can get you a long ways, and when you decide to give it up, don't think killing them with a rifle is easy :D it's not, equal challenge, just a different set of difficulties (i'm sure you are full aware of that)

I was shooting great last year, but when it came to hunting, I made a poor first shot on my bull, and it was an easy shot. it was the worst shot I have made. not sure what went wrong, but i'm sure nervs were the culprit. I felt good and calm, but my shot found liver, 6" from where I was aiming. I was lucky to get another shot at 60yds, and made good of it, but every year humbles me in some way or another.

I think you spent your day as well, dedicated to what actually matters. keep us posted!

on a different topic, i'm under 165lbs, first time since I was 25. i'm 6' even, but have always been slim, I am at about perfect weight right now, 160ish. I was 184 in Dec, so i'm happy. allit took was minimal diet change, and being aware of my food consumption. no more midnight snacks of ice cream or reeses PB cups. easy to do, and lots of positive feedback for my effort.

Roosie--the fact you had a slight change to your diet and lost 20# ticks me off to no end. Enjoy that while you can mister! I used to do that. No more though. I have been eating really well since March. I have been hiking roughly 20 miles per week with a 30# pack, I do 40 situps and 20 pushups daily. You know what I have lost? Maybe 5#. I swear my metabolism is so slow I might live forever on a Snickers Bar!! Man, am I jealous.

Last week: 20.5 miles hiking plus the daily pushups and situps. Started lifting a little 15 pound weight while I drive my desk too.

Which reminds me. I took that 15# dumbbell on a hike with me to simulate carrying my bow. Holy cow did that kick my butt! At the halfway point all I wanted to do was throw that sucker in the ditch.

As far as Swede's shooting ability, I would wager there is not an elk on the mountain that is safe when he is sitting in his stand and said elk is within range. I know for a fact not any of them are willing to volunteer to try him!

Thanks guys. I am not close to giving up. I hope when the time comes to be gracious and not risk wounding a critter. Certainly reducing my shooting distance will preferred to quitting. I am not much of a cook, so staying in camp is not desired. I feel blessed that I have been able to stay steady and not get too excited when the moment of truth comes. I can get nervous after I see a broadhead do its deadly work.

Tossed a bunch of arrows out of some different bows and chose my bow. The BTX has been good and stable for a while and I'm shooting it as good as anything else.

On Sunday managed to get out and drive around some spots I'm planning on hunting. Coming up with a bunch of plans to accommodate wind/other hunters.

Went back to the range with a bunch of test rounds for the 06. Got a group of 4 within 1.5" at 100 yds. 47gr of Varget and 165gr Hornady Patitions were the best for consistency which is a little different. Usually Reloader 15 is more consistent with my rifle. Only using a Lead Sled Plus with no weight to help out my old shoulder! Shot another 100 rounds through my Sig Para in rapid bursts.

Oh, and walked to the target after each test load rather than using a spotting scope! Put on almost a mile doing that alone.

I've used that stuff years and years ago. Ticks and chiggers are terrible here in Missouri and especially during spring turkey season. I always bought it at Wal-Mart in the camping section. Spray it on your clothes as directed and hang them out on the line to dry and bingo, you're good to go for a long long time - like the whole season. Worked very well when I did it.

Okay, there is this pasta bar. You take whatever veggies and meat and then bring it to the guy who tosses it in butter, adds spices, sauces and noodles all that you pick. It is soooo dang good. We don't go there a lot or I would look like a blimp, but last night since the kids are at camp the wife and I went there. Elk hunting be damned; I punished that pasta bar! Probably un-did all of my July training in one meal, but it was SOOOOO worth it. I feel like I have let you guys down. And guess what? I don't care cuz it was soooooo danged good!

I did do my usual workouts and walked, errr waddled after our meal for another couple miles.

I put chains in my pack and hiked river trail at 2 pm today, probably 105 heat index, maybe 110 .....

Just about messed up big time.

#1 I had cotton socks
#2 the pavement was very hot

Anybody with any sense knows that combo = feet issues. Just as I got back, I felt the burn in the pad on my right foot. I don't think its bad - another 1/2 mile and it might have been.

Got my custom maps in the mail from Ed at Game Planner Maps. Love having waterproof maps that are 2 sided. It used to take 4 maps to encompass my 2 areas. Now I carry one 2 sided! Love it.

Oh and I just finished carrying a 25 pound tool belt with shoulder straps around for 40 hours. Elk hunters are a special breed. I have the most physical job Ive ever had. The other guys, most of them way younger than me, are saying please God get me through this day. Meanwhile Im like "Bring it on elk season will be here before I know it!"

I did my hiking today and shot my bow again. Sometimes I am not sure I am preparing or if I am going reverting back.

Packed 5 gallon buckets of mortar and stone up the ladder and up the roof. Got to finish the chimney chase. Promised the wife it'd be done before I leave for elk season.

Sound wisdom Elkhntr08. Get all those house boss chores knocked about before elk season so you have nothing to worry about during your absence from the ranch ;). Mrs. W gets back Monday from her two week trip so I spent the day catching up on my chores... Weed beat about 1/2 an acre of weeds early this morning, shot some arrows, mowed the front/back yard, shot some arrows, did a few loads of laundry/vacuumed the carpets, swept the wood flows, shot some arrows (you see where I'm going here), watered the remote pretty flower containers and hanging plants on wrap around porch (hell is to pay if I let her flowers die), BBQ'ed some shrimp, shot some arrows, and even gave Oscar, the BT mix a bath (he is the one of the five that likes to roll in the dirt/mud the most, almost as if wallowing). The Darton is shooting beyond my repeatable accuracy capabilities but I was able to get all my pins (distant ones in particular) zeroed, cranked down, locked down and ready to kill. The pic is two shots from 60; my farthest pin on my MBG sight.. It's getting close! Will do a bit of hiking and some barbells for shoulders/arms tomorrow and back to hiking with weight on my back Monday....

Did a 3.5 mile hike with 30# pack. As I hiked the trail through town I ran into the farmers market. What did I buy? Well donuts of course! I did eat one too before the kids got to them. Mmmm mm. It was worth it.

81.5 miles in July with my pack on! I consider that a win! Wont get as high in August as we have a family vaca and Youth Outdoor Activity Day coming up, but should still get out quite a bit. Today specifically, I went on a 2 mile hike and went to the chiropractor for a tune up. Lots of little adjustments has me in tip top shape now!

1:15 of getting my butt kicked in racquetball
then tried to do bleachers at the football stadium and my 2 surgeries left knee said lets not ... so I just walked level ground instead

this might be my last solo DIY backpack elk hunt if these knee's don't behave and fall into line with what my mind thinks they can do :(

Drove down to Kelso early this morning to pick up the Darton, sporting her new SideHill Custom bow strings/cables. I was not disappointed! Normally with this company, you just tell them what make/model your bow is and they knock out a top deck custom string (or string/cables) and send it to your door. With the new Darton Maverick, it took a bit longer as they had no template for the bow (Darton's new flagship bow early this spring). Since they actually had my bow in hand, they took the extra step to ensure it was still tuned and ready to rock and roll. Pic below is the "first" shot at their shop with the new string/cables installed... Not too shabby .

Mrs. W wanted to go into Yelm for some Mexican chow so I uncovered Big Red and we rumbled in for some mid afternoon dinner (ate way, way too much and washed it down with a few Coronas).

Got back to the ranch and hit some free weights on and off this afternoon/evening (curls, shoulder shrugs, shoulder presses), shot a good handful of arrows with the newly equipped bow (just had to adjust my sight down a bit but no horizontal needed), was zinging them in out to 40 with no problem. Really liking the new string/cables... the Darton string/cable is now on standby as a backup if anything unfortunate happens to the SideHill set (things happen, I always try to have a back up set for my primary bow).

Gonna work on getting SideHill Custom Bowstrings to be a sponsor here... I sure like their products and the CS has been nothing short of exceptional...

Edit: Oh, almost forgot. Getting up early tomorrow for a hike with the dogs, "and", I have two pounds of elk meat thawing out so I can make a big ol' fat batch of elk chili for ID this year (elk meat-check, onions-check, green/red peppers-check, James Dean hot sausage-check, red kidney beans-check, celery-check, tomato sauce-check, beef broth-check, hickory smoke-check......)... I've just gotta keep Mrs. W from stealing bowls for herself :P

Took a full pack (around 40 lbs) on a 9-mile hike through the mountains. I didn't do too bad for a guy that turns 60 in a couple of weeks, it took me a little over 4 hours of walking with a couple of breaks in between. The good news is that the hike made a few pounds of extra fat burn off. The bad news is that I am feeling it today but other than sore muscles I'm in pretty good shape.

Life seems to never slow down... can't believe it is the 16th... went scouting last week, found out a main road up where I killed my elk last year was washed out this spring and it might be years before the forest service has it opened again. It's always amazing to see the power of water

I did a little adjustment to the elevation on my arrow rest and then to the sights. My broadheads and field points are all together now. I am feeling good about my shooting and my bow/arrow combination. I just need a stupid elk to walk out broadside and stop in front of me within 40 yards.

I did the treadmill and shot my bow some more. I packed a little more and mowed the lawn. It will be a long time before it gets mowed again. Mrs. Swede may have bought a goat and staked it out in front of the house before I get back.

Back to a morning hike with my old Army Alice pack on my back tomorrow morning then gonna shoot a bunch of arrows tomorrow afternoon. OH, and I have 3 pounds of elk burger thawing out so I can make the camp elk chili and elk meatball spaghetti sauce tomorrow

Did a short hike this morning with pack, shot some arrows, crocked up some elk chili (its cooling now before I can put it in the containers and freeze it), and, am in the process of baking up some primo elk meatballs to go in the basketti sauce that's simmering. Tried a bit of a different recipe for the elk meat balls, hoping the cats at camp like it. I've got to have a couple of elk meat laden camp meals lined up this year in case Swede gets skeered upon seeing big stinky and misses his shot opportunity  . Having elk meat in your system is always a plus when in the elk woods, yes?

What did you do today to prepare for the 2017 elk season?

Postby BearPawCustom4570 » 08 20, 2017 •  [Post 216]

Over the last two weeks in preparation for back country backpack hunt I have:

1) confirmed rifle sight in and backup revolver

2) updated gps and hunting maps

3) checked all gear

4) review maps and check with forest service

5) check irridium satcom

6) sharpen skinning knives

7) battery check

8) layout pack contents

all that is left now is to pack and go in early to scout for elk in the areas i have identified on map and previously scouted. i have hiked all summer, exercised regularly and shot at the range to make sure I am ready.

It sounds like you are ready Bearpaw. Good luck on the hunt and let us know how things go. I may be still out when you get back, but for now welcome to the W.T. camp. The inmates run the asylum here and we humor RJ by letting him think he is in charge. Everyone is happy that way.

Bow is sighted in out to 40. Need to work on the slider part for the 50 yet.

Of course shooting (and well!) And scouting 2 days.

I had a friend named John pass away about a month ago, another one of his good friends and mine went and scouted his favorite spot yesterday, we are going to hunt it some this year, I'm sure John will be there hunting with us too.

I organized my duffle bag, vacuum sealed base and mid layers. Took my new Kuiu Ultra 1800 pack off the frame and wrote a email to Anthony at Kuiu informing him I was returning it and ordered the 1850 pack. I practiced my cow and bugle calling, neighbors prolly loved that! I organized my food and camping box, ordered new Huk performance underwear,. Went to Academy and bought bow tape to silence the bow. Went to the gym for 1 1/2 hours and worked on stretching and strengthening my legs.
And I watched the Yeti Linquists Video.
Putting my time to good use as I wait out Harvey the Horrible. Better day today.

That only counts if the car breaks down and you have to walk.

I started a new job. Shell Cracker Plant. Largest construction project in the country right now. Way closer to home at only 15 minutes away. I consider it preparation for elk hunting because the money is good.

Now to file the forms for my 2 weeks off. Next step buy a toy hauler for some classy camping.

got my broadhead situation resolved. Going with Slick Tricks. Did the usual hike and situps/pushups. Tried to call the Game Warden and left a message.

My hunting buddy had a job within and hour of where we are going, so he got an afternoon to go check out our spot. We are pretty pumped! Looks good and found a great camping spot.

My cousin and his buddies went to Idaho and one of the buddies shot a cow. pretty pumped for him!

Howdy. Well I did a lift(2.5 inch front, 2 inch rear) on my 2015 Chevy Colorado LT 4WD Crew Cab(w/front air dam removed). It also needs some new rear shocks as the originals are a bit too soft. It should now be ready for the USFS roads. :-) This is a lesson learned from last year! My truck wasn't in mountain shape either. LOL

Loaded 1/2 of gear into suburban lastnight. (non perishable or able to take heat) Load final few items and bow in tonight, then cooler food in morning.

Nothing but black marks in the parking lot and the music of schreaching tires as soon as I am off work tomorrow afternoon! Elk season 2017 will be underway!
