Longbow Bull!

Postby ElkNut1 » 09 18, 2017 •  [Post 1]

My son was able to get it done with a Longbow! Just under 30 yard shot & some slight hair pulling on both our parts! (grin) It took forever to get this guy worked up, they just weren't rutting yet but it all worked out!

amazing!!!

that is spectacular....very well done! impressive!

traditional gear adds a pretty thick layer of difficulty, I hope to achieve that some day.

Cngrats on a very nice bull with a very good shot for a long bow. I too have noticed the elk are getting heavier, so I am shooting spikes now. I told RJ early in our hunt, I would be happy with a spike. I guess the Lord heard me. I did not hear any complaints that the bull was too light.

Paul, tell us about that bow. How many pounds is it and how far can you effectively shoot it? Does it have the ability to pass a arrow through an elk?

Thank you guys! The Longbow is a Sapphire Hawk made by Ernie McKenzie out of MT. It's 59# at 27" & 61" long, I had it made to those specs! We generally shoot a 500 grain arrow out of that bow whether it being Cedar Shafts or Carbons, this year was a Cedar Shaft. Yes, we've had several pass-throughs with this setup. We've taken elk with the SnufferSS, Rothar Snuffer, Wensel Woodsman & Wensel Woodsman Elite with this particular bow. We limit our shots to 35 yards, that's a fair piece for a longbow as it takes daily practice to stay sharp! This year my Son was shooting this bow out past 50 yards with very good results making 35 yard shots & under look easy!

Most important part of setups for us is RAZOR SHARP HEADS! They are a must to insure good blood trails!

Paul, any advice on how light is too light?

I am hoping to gain proficiency and strength by next season, I want to ditch compounds for awhile and switch to a recurve.

I was kind of setting a goal of 55lbs @ 28", with a 550ish grain arrow, is that realistic inside 25yds?

Surprisingly different, I pull 73lbs easily on my hunting compound, and takes a lot of shooting to fatigue, my current recurve is 45lbs, and I fatigue just as fast.

I am always hugely impressed by people who get it done with traditional equipment

As a rule of thumb it's good to be in the 9 to 10 grains of arrow weight per pound of draw weight! So for 50# you would entertain 450 grain to 500 grains of total arrow weight, that includes broadhead too. You could go heavier but it's not necessary for deer & elk type critters!

That is very impressive Paul. I flirt with the idea of trying a long bow but I talk myself out of it LOL.

thank you sir!

that is some very cool stuff to me! must add quite a bit of excitement, knowing how right things must go to kill a bull with traditional gear.

It's definitely a challenging way to hunt elk especially when you're used to using a compound. There are a few mechanical & mental adjustments to consider with trad gear but it sure is fun & satisfying when it all comes together! (grin) That was my sons 4th bull with trad gear!
